ECU Conversion question

ECU Conversion question
I'm sure my sources are right but I want to hear everyones feedback,
Im basically swapping an 04 EJ20 to an 01 RS and from what my sources tell me is that the 04 ECU wont work for the conversion and that I'd have to get an 02 ECU for it to work?
For future refrence with the car I'd prolly leave it stock with minor bolt on upgrades...
