2005 WRX to STI conversion

Hello this has probably been asked and if so please provide me with a link. I have a 2005 WRX 5speed. i am looking to convert it to an STI. I want sti engine tranny rear end center diff front diff brakes and everything in between. i need to know what i would need to do this. I will be buying a salvage STI but i am not sure which year sti i should buy a 2004 or a 2005. I need to know what parts i would need from the doner car. Please any information is great for me. I saw a black bug eyed wrx wit ha 2004+ rear with 5zigen fno1r-c rims who has done this, i talked to him on 24th and quintara and asked me about my smoked out tailights, if u read this or anyone know who i am talkin about please PM me because i am interested in all the info that i can get. Sorry if this post is a lil long. THanck you everyone in advance!

Trade your car in! Why didn't you buy an STI in the first place?

For the short answer,

You'll need the transmission, drive shaft, rear diff, rear halfshafts, rear uprights (knuckle), rear brakes (rotors and calipers + misc. bits).

You may need the front halfshafts, but I don't know for certain. I think the front assemblies are the same from the front diff outwards.

My roommate just did this transplant from a 04 STi into a 02 WRX. I don't know the install details, but I do remember the parts we needed to collect. It sounds like you have a good handle on the mechanical side of things, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask and if I can't answer, hopefully someone will.

Also, for what its worth, my roommate, before this conversion, also put on the STi spec StopTech kit. You will have to replace your rear brakes to fit onto the rear uprights (which are needed for the rear halfshafts and rear diff which need to be swapped) and if you don't change the fronts and probably even the master cylinder, you may have bias and pedal feel issues.

Thanx alot. When i drop the engine in is there any special wiring thati will have to do? Also will the ecu from an sti just plug in into the stock location or will i have to rewire everything. The mechanical and wrneching part is not that much of a problem for me, i just mostly need to know if the wireing will fit right up, if not then i really would appriciate it if some one explained to me what i will need to rewire.

You are planning on transplanting the engine too, right? Everything should just bolt into place properly.

I would assume that the ECU would be just fine. Wiring up the DCCD controller might be a challenge, but not too bad. If you are swapping the ECU from the STi, then you shouldn't have big problems. You may need to rewire some pre-exiting harnesses, but I can't help you with the details there. I'm am no good on wiring, but hopefully someone who knows what they are talking about can help.

Oh, and be aware that if you get an 05 STi as a donor, your bolt pattern on your wheel lugs will change to 5x114.3 instead of the 5x100 your car is now.

a salvage 2004 sti runs about $6000-$7000. would be worth it... if you had a older wrx... spending $6000-$7000 more you could have bought a 2005 sti instead of the wrx. who knows you might find a cheap sti somewhere...
i thought about doing that too, i also have a 2005 wrx. well if do the conversion good luck.

Yeah i considered the bolt pattern as well and doesn't seem to be much of a problem for me. What does the dccd controller connect to? does it plug into the ecu?

I believe the DCCD connects to ECU, the transmission and the rear diff

If i sell my stock parts and some of the left over sti parts it shouldn't cost me anything. Thanx for the sugestion though. If i had $30k+ to spend on a car at the time i bought it, i would most likely buy a g35 sedan 6-speed, or a track model 350Z, but this car seems to be more practical and cheaper insurence then an sti from how i undestand, and it is cheaper to mod. After getting smoked by a civic i desided this car needs more power, and i think the best way to do it is just get an sti engine and drivetrain.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is there anything in particular i should look out for when doing the swap?

you might want to think about upgrade your stock parts. maybe something like this: get a vf34 turbo, bigger intercooler, uppipe, downpipe, cat back exhaust, and accessport. that will get you a lot of power

everything should pretty much bolt up. you have to splice the wiring harness
