2005 bar legal swap

I have a 2005 wrx shell and I need help on a motor swap that will be california BAR legal.
I remember from my old honda days that the motor has to be from the same model or newer and have everything from the intake to the cat the same year.

My question is: what motors will fit that description(bar/smog legal) and won't break the bank. I remember reading something about the 05 are limited because they don't have valve timing adjustment(?)
I want to have a good street legal weekend car. I just need to get her back on the road.

A hybrid (2.0L heads on a 2.5L block) motor would fit the bill. For the most part, it's plug and play. If you go with anything newer EJ255 or EJ257, you're going to have to redo the wiring harness.

How hard/costly it is to do the wiring harness. I assume you need all the supporting equipment? ECU etc

imma say about 3k? I've been looking at other alternatives for the future as well..

as far as ecu...i beleive if you are using your 2.0 head, you use the same ecu, probbaly just need a tune.
