sounds like a clutch more than a tranny problem, its a manual right? slipping clutch would do what you described, and it would feel really sluggish...

 

i replaced the clutch in the car about 13 months ago. it has a cable clutch and it still has feeling in the clutch pedal. is there any way to check to see if the clutch had a failure without pulling the tranny. if it is just a clutch then that will be cheap

 

i dont know much about subaru's, i just got mine and really haven't done much maintance on it, but if a clutch isn't properly broken in after the install it can basically start slipping right away... on most cars there is a clutch inspection plate between the transmission bell housing and the engine, its just a little plate that you unbolt and it gives you a little bit of access to check out the clutch, see if its glazed over etc etc, not sure if subaru's have this or not but it would be worth looking into at the very least... sorry i couldn't be more help, hope it all works out for you in the end...
