VW 1.8T Sedan Fast?
VW 1.8T Sedan Fast?
anyone REALLLLLLYYYYY familiar with this car???
i know this car is potent but not sure as to how potent it really is. someone says that they remapped the ecu, boost set at 20 psi, exhaust, intake and maybe other possible bolt ons.
would this be able to keep up with wrx's with cobb stage 2 or even ..... dare i say it.... STi's from a stop or even rolling???

i highly doubt it. They would need a lot of work done, but even still i don't see it happening. Of course there are always exceptions...

Ok. I just sold my 2002 1.8T GTI. Yes familiar with it. VERY. Too familiar. I hated that car soooo much.
Firstly... I think the ABS was horrible. Like freaking terrible. Compared to my old 2000 2.5RS it was really bad.
Secondly, the VW folks would like to tell you that this is THE tuner's engine. I personally think it costs way to much to buy this and that and only get 10 more HP. And then oh BTW you need to replace your ECU for the 3rd time because of this that and the other.
Which brings me to, Three. My 02 broke down sooo much. I never modded it because I was having so much trouble keeping the damn thing running. It's a fact that Germans use soft copper for their electronic's, the Japanese use a coated copper. Which is why VW's are known for their electrical issues. I've had 3 VW's and they all had weird gremlins that no one seems to be able to fix. Stock up on 02 sensors. Especially if you add an intake.
Four it's just baddly designed. The suspension in the Mark 4's is inhearantly flawed. The car looks terrible when the suspension is tuned correctly. It's cool if you're down with @$$ dragging I guess. Second gear grind that requires a new tranny installed if you're able to get a stealership to warranty it. Bad coil packs. Bad ECU's. Windows falling into the door on the freeway because of a faulty clip. Bad window regulators. Soft plastics that show huge amounts of wear after 20k miles. For some God for saken reason the passenger side brake light will always go out first. And will repeatedly fail every 10k miles. (I swear look at any Audi or VW on the road) Plastic pieces falling off. Shall I continue?
Ok a 1.8T FWD beating a 2.5T AWD? ok never mind that. Able to follow a 2.5 litre turbo? Basic rule of automotive engineering. "There's no replacement for displacement" Yeah yeah yeah forced induction and blah blah blah but they both have turbo's so we just leveled the playing field. If you have a stock-mildly modded WRX you know that a Corvette LT1 can spank you. This question should not have even been asked. I'll try and humor you though.
APR has a turbo upgrade, more or less a stage 2.5, (I know you didn't say upgrade the turbo but I'm trying to help you out here.) Upgrade the standard K03 turbo to the K04 and add exhaust and remap the ECU. You'll push 245 HP to the front wheels. The bargin low price.... 1700 dollars
Cobb Tuning stage one (or Cobb Access Port) 260 HP.... wait for it... 595.00 and you didn't void your warranty. (Well you kind of did.) Oh yeah it also has AWD so you can prolly dump the clutch and pull a 0-60 in about 4.9 seconds... You'll likely have to dump 3999.00 for the APR stage III+ to touch that time on your VW. 0-60 on a 1.8T stock is about 7 seconds.
22k + 4K = 26000
I saw a WRX, an 05, for 23688 with the premium package the other day.
They look kind of nice and seem to have more luxury feel. But if you want performance get a WRX or anything else. If you want a luxury car... get a freaking BMW. IT'S A FREAKING VOLKSWAGEN!!!! HIPPIE'S MAN!!!! HIPPIES!**
But I digress. To each their own.
:P
cheers

**dispite having 3 VW's and living in San Francisco I'm not a hippie. Hense my recent liquidation of all VW's and recent repurchase of a 2001 impreza. The VW's just didn't take.
I own a 2001 jetta 1.8t and i know a lot about them. You can get decent hp gains out of the engine from simple bolt ons yes, however, it won't be able to keep up with an sti untill it has an APR stage 3 kit on it which pritty much gives it a new turbo etc.. With that it will be running mid 12's. Even then the STi will always beat it off the line because of the AWD. They are quick cars but I won't call them fast. What you would have to worry about is the VR6 engine. If you turbo a VR6 engine you can get it 500+hp. But then again don't forget that both golf's and jetta's with these engines are only FWD so it's MUCH harder to actually get all that power to the ground. Hope this helped.
cool. just getting a little paranoid. besides the fact that most of the people commenting on a friends cars doesnt know anything about cars, everyone was saying he had about 300 hp.... im not aware of his upgrades. im just hoping that he didnt upgrade his turbo.
I have a friend who is sponsered by TM tuning and has about 340+crank hp and has never had one problem with that car. The car has about 25K+miles. The downside to the turbo upgrade on the vw is turbolag. To push 340 crank it has alot of turbo lag. On a wrx you can add a vf-34 (stock jdm turbo) and push 350+crank and have a car that drives well.
VWs are good highway cars that handel some what decent. There reliability some times come into question. You should remember though their family lineage is of Audi (S4 ,RS6) ,so the formula or potentail may be there. I 've been to several water fest events and help several friends build VR6 power VW. Many of these cars will dyno at over 300hp but on the track only run low 14s to mid 13s. The cars running 12s or better(far and few) are usually heavly worked. The trend among VW enthusiast is switch to S4 power plant or 1.8T now. so something must be going on with that motor,I'v herd rumors of these cars being able to handel 18 to 20 psi of boost .If thats the case they just may have something there

Mod for mod, the WRX will have more power. A modded VW vs. stock Subaru is a different story.
Handling is important too! Handling has to go to the Subaru. LSD and ESP with FWD on the VW cannot compete with AWD.
