ugly new entry level toyota things...
i saw a toyota Scion, or whatever they're calling those things on my way into work this morning. good lord, it has to be one of the ugliest cars that i've seen in a long, long time. it was the super boxy one, i'm not sure what the actual name of it is, but it looked like a cheap, ghetto version of a Mercedes Geladenwagen. if it was the size of a mini, it might have some 'cute' appeal, but it's the size of a Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4. it's almost as repulsive as some of the new pontiac sport utility things.
the funny thing is that Toyota is trying to appeal to the 25 and under set with these things, but i don't think that anyone under 25 is going to want to be caught dead in one of these. between these things and the new Matrix, Toyota has really dropped the ball. they ought to go back to making AWD celicas and Supras that can hold 800hp.

I would actually have to disagree with you about the Matrix. They are perfect for what they are, which is a multifunctional car on a budget. 4 WD, good fuel economy, good pricing and Toyota reliability. As far as styling that's a personal prefference but I kind of like them.

true, the Matrix is a functional vehicle i'll grant you that. however, i haven't really seen many out on the streets, and so i'm assuming that they're not selling well. i don't know if it's the way that Toyota is marketing it or what it's competing against that accounts for the low numbers of them on the street.
I love that little Box. It's called Scion XB and it is Toyota bB in Japan.
It won't replace my Subaru but I'd buy this one over Civic, Corolla and those other grocery getters.
it is a lot smaller than RAV4,CRV.
it shares chasis and engine with Echo

i swear the photos make the thing look better than it did out on the open road. the one i saw was dark blue without all the of the dressed up bodywork shown in the photos. it looked like a mini that was morbidly obese, but with sharp corners.

I kinda like the Matrix. I've started seeing quite a lot of them on the roads around L.A. Looks good in stock form (they look lowered to my eyes). Nice body kit. Toyota build quality.
As for that Scion thing, I like that too. The wing on the roof is funny.
When I was in Japan last year, I saw loads of cars similar to the Scion, and got to ride in a few of them too. Good fun. I wouldn't mind having a Scion for grocery shopping, as an alternate to my WRX and 328i.

I think the Matix looks good, and I am sure it is practical. But the engine is not a good match for it. It is underpowered, and even with the 180 hp engine it is still not a good match. I think it should have a bigger displacement torquier engine. The people who I see driving them (middle aged women) aren't going to rev it and wind out the gears to get some power out of it.
I don't like the Scion xB, I think the thing looks rediculous. If it had some other tangible merrit I would look past its uglieness, but I don't see much. Maybe its low sticker and utility, but it not enough. I don't think many young kids would be caught dead in that thing.
The xA is a little better, but it is mostly just a different flavor of Echo. I don't see how Toyota thinks the youth will respond well to these cars. I bet the people who buy it will be middle aged to old people who just want to get from point A to B as cheaply as possible.
There is saposed to be a third "sporty" Scion comming out soon, has anyone heard anything about it?

good luck to toyota....underpowered, aerodynamics from a hummer...no need to go on. They would make sweet ice-cream trucks. Just for shytes and giggles, i would like to see someone throw a turbo on one. One of the major mags said toyota was aiming for the import tuner scene...start tuning your ice-cream trucks!

The Matrix is kinda ugly to me.....but I think the Pontiac Vibe looks kind of cool. Unfortunately it kind of looks like a mini- minivan. And oh yes is it underpowered, but only if you compare it to the mighty WRX wagon. I was seriously pondering buying a vibe gt 180 hp, but damn I had to hit like 8000 rpms before anything happened, and when it happened, it was kind of weak. I'm scared of how pathetic the lower model ones would drive.
As for the ice cream truck Scion, I think if it is as big as a minivan, it will be ugly, but if it is smaller- like matrix size, than it will be ok. And I do see kids buying this car if it is like 15000 dollars. They'll probably give up on making it fast, but will go with the slow car nice stereo system look. I think it will be the same crowd of kids that buy PT cruisers.
What do yall think about the Honda Element? I thought it was kind of cool- not very fast or anything like that, but the room inside was cool, and it looked very down to earthy. But then I test drove it and 9 out of 10 ppl stopped and stared, giving me the "who's the homo in the box" look. I said screw it, I'm not going through this everyday!

I agree that the new scions are thus far pretty ugly. I just read an article with the head of scion north america or whatever they are calling it. Essentially what I got from the article is that the 3rd scion that is due out pretty soon is going to be damn impressive. I think its going to be a sporty car instead of a box on wheels. Maybe they are just trying to build up the 3rd scion by making the first two as ugly as possible.

I would think that Toyota would finally offer a Vitz/Yaris RS in the US under the Scion label. If that is the case, it will be a pretty sweet sporty ride for low cost. Anyone who's played GT3 or been to japan has seen a Vitz. I would definitely want one for a second ride. You should do a little web research. I know TRD has been buggin Toyota to release a Vitz/Yaris in the US. It looks pretty good too (here's a pic of the Yaris turbo).
