Buy a used Legacy GT (95'-01') for under 10k, then do a USDM (smog legal) Subaru turbo engine swap. Sleeper, mid-size, under 17k, and reliable - the swapped engine should have low mileage.

I don't think y'all understand sleeper...or at least Sonic does.
Take a car that you see on the road everyday that is widely known as a non-threatening, even anti-performance car. Heavy or light weight I don't think are critical. It has to be non-descript with tremendous power, like a Ford Tempo that's turbo'd or with a Cobra engine swap.
The best sleeper I've ever seen is that 10.41 @132 second Dodge Reliant K car. (RCSA) Found at this webpage.

Can you say "wagunnn" . If you want to stay with the Suby family, may I suggest the WRX Wagon or the Forester XT. Bag full of groceries in the back, bikes on the top and turning 250+WHP... that is a sleeper.

Vibe and Peanut got the right idea.
Personally, I'm kicking around the idea of putting my EJ20 that used to be in my WRX along with my VF30 into my 1990 Loyale.
