Strangely enough, its more common for Subaru motors to be put into older Porsche's (esp. the 914).

Porsche motors are too wide. At least the "good" ones.

Yes, prior to the new EJ20/EJ25 fad, 914 swappers mostly used Chevy small block V8s, like the Miata guys and the Z car guys and a few wacky RX7 guys.

Yes, V8 Northstar engines into 914s. I've driven one, it is an interesting experience -- and not worthwhile; you've got so much torque you can flex the frame of the car.

Not true at all. Subaru and Porsche have a LOT more in common than you think; the Subaru engineers who made the first boxer engines were heavily influenced by Porsche engines, especially the 962 and 959 engines; Japan and Germany had a very close relationship for a while, if you remember your history. And the Impreza frame can easily handle the power and torque of almost any Porsche engine; it just wouldn't have the same weight distribution, obviously.

Driving a high-powered Subaru is like driving a Porsche backwards.

Heh, then when I was driving that 911 backwards I was driving a Subaru?

BTW, I know from personal experience that a Legacy GT Turbo with front/rear sway bars can badly shame a 2003 Boxter, both in a straight line and corners. Porsche makes great cars, but they are no longer the kings of the road they used to be. Look at the last time Porsche won a GT-class or Touring-class trophy (hint: not recently).

Here's an interesting take on the Porshe/Subaru kinship:

As a previous "teener" (slang for the bastard 914 model that other Porsche owners don't acknowledge as bearing the same lineage) owner, and having owned a bimmer, my current WRX and my 65 Chevelle; I can honestly say that the appeal of slaping a 300hp sbc(small block chevy) into a 914 was great because of the alure of putting decent power to a car that handles like it was on rails. The gutless 4bangers (the 2.0 liter wasn't quite so bad) majorly detracted from the appeal of hte vehicle. Ultimately I opted not do the SBC modification because I had a rare rust free teener and didn't feel it would be right to cut up the front for the radiator etc, and because the weight / torque of the sbc would undoubted upset the car's ballance and somewhat foolproof handling.

All that being said, had ej20 take outs been readily available on the cheap 5 years ago, I might have cut that car up afterall If you're interested in swapping in non porsche power into a 914, the number one source on kits would definitely be Renegade Hybrids. http://www.renegadehybrids.com/turbo914/914subaru.html

As far as going the other way around and dropping a 6cyl Porsche mill in the WRX... One of the greatest things about the WRX (IMO) is the fact that it is a ballanced vehicle that is capable of outstanding performance with limited maintenance, and lower than typical pricepoint for its capabilities. Adding a Porsche mill do the equation would kill that ballance.

I have a friend who put a Subaru motor into his 914. The car was pretty quick even though it was only a Legacy turbo engine. There are a lot of V8 converted 914's out there but the extra weight upsets the balance of the car.

It would be interesting to put a WRX or STi engine in the car. Imagine the output of those engines in a 2100 pound package. I had a 914-6 with a 2.5 liter 911 engine (old GTU engine). The car put out between 250-280 hp at the flywheel and weighed 2100 pounds with me in the car and a full tank of gas.

The 914's were very underpowered and unpopular but their handling is exceptional. In a basically stock 914 2.0 with BFG Comp T/A R1's my friend and I were consistently running laps in the 1:56 range at Laguna Seca four years ago. I think with the new R-compound rubber, we could probably be in the 1:54 range. There are guys what do spring and torsion bar upgrades and minor engine mods that are turning laps in the 1:50 range. It would be interesting to run a set up 914 with a 250-300 hp normally aspirated boxer six (my friend has one in his shop I'm thinking about dropping into my race car)!
