ok what about A4 vs. WRX
price....
I'm surprised that this conversation has proceeded for as long as it has without price making a significant appearance in the thread.
Consider this... new body style aside, for what you pay for an 04 A4 1.8T quattro, which has anout 3/4 the horsepower of a stock WRX, you could buy an STi, and enough Dynamat to carpet from here to Kansas.
The 2.8 is a larger heavier luxury car, and the old S4 produced 250HP for roughly the cost of his and hers WRX's in your choice of colors, and you'd still have enough to put both WRX's up to 250HP.
The new S4, which has a gorrilla of 4.2 liter has impressive HP numbers, but will set you back roughly 2 STi's.
So I guess apart from re-iterating everything that's already been said about comparing apples to oranges, if you're REALLY concerned about road noise in your WRX, splurge on a little dynamat and an undercoating. If you're comparing the ride quality on your wife's stock audi, with your modded WRX with larger aftermarket rims, and a modified suspension, you ought to have your head examined.
And really I'm getting annoyed with the number of times I have heard the term "econobox", and "poor build quality" associated with WRX. I challenge anyone to do the following:
Open your WRX's door, roll down the window, and sit on the door. Now bounce up and down, and listen. silence. Now, track down your buddy with a civic, and ask him if you can do the same on his car.
and a Civic is a well respected (if bottom end) vehicle! Go drive a Hyundai Accent and come back here and tell me that a WRX is an econobox. Have some appreciation for what you've got.

The Impreza IS an econobox. I personally feel that it is superior to other econoboxes in terms of build quality and comfort, but it is an econobox.
I think the price difference goes without saying.

My father is on his 2nd A4, its a REALLY nice car, but its a dog compared to a WRX (his 1st Audi was the 1.8T, his second is the 6 cyl).
If you want comfort, go A4. If you want speed, go WRX.

1. She has the same mods as I do. Did you not see the part about how she has 18" Ace Desires with Yoko ES100s? I am a perfectionist and so I mod everything the same except my has RSB mod and she doesn't! But Audi is still much better in ride quality!
2. Never called WRX anything! I like the WRX that's why I bought it! My original choice was an Infiniti G35x with 290HP same price point as an Audi, but I chose Subaru since I liked it more and being an Mech Eng, I like modding things and with a WRX you could. Plus Infiniti is more of an old man car!
3. I do appreciate what I have! I pray to the stars everynight I have it! And stay up wondering if tonight is the night my car will get broken into!

I am ribbing ya on 3. I love everything about the WRX dude thats why I became an owner. I also like the Audi but each has it's own place. Drive my kid around = WRX, go to a play or dinner with friends = Audi.

since everyone is bringing their wife into the picture
... me and my wife both drive a wrx and STi. we seriously considered an audi wagon before buying her wrx wagon. the one thing that drove us to the subie is because the the cost of ownership would be considerably lower. we figured that within 7-8 years that we would be financially happier with the wrx- - -
our main focus is to have some decent cars but have excellent homes. with the audi that simply would not be a reality.... dishing out 40-50 g's simply put our reality in perspective. maybe later on in life when i'm ready to retire my sore back from my STi - then will i consider something as comfortable as the audi, or maybe a lexus...

A4 vs WRX (STI Included)
Was up in Jersey somewhere with a buddy of mine, and we were installing an HID kit for a 01 A4. His friend had this black STI which was hooked with a downpipe, exhaust, FMIC, and some type of chip. Pardon me for a bit since I am new into the Sube scene. (formerly a Honda fanatic). Well the the 2 raced a couple of times just for kicks. I was telling my boy, watch the STI kick the hell out of this boat. Man was I wrong. A4 handed it to the STI over and over again. Raced about 4 times and each time the A4 handed it to the STI. I used to sleep on these A4's but after seeing that, man that got me convinced. Turns out the A4 was somewhere in the lines of 320 to 350 at the wheels running a GT28RS Turbo with upgraded software and bigger injectors.

First of there is no way an A4 will cost any where near 50 g's. Maybe closer to 40 if anything. If you think about it, the STI is probably cheaper by 4 g's. My friend has a 2004 A4 and it cost him with the lighting package and sport suspension, about 35K. Maybe an A6 and an S4 would be more in the range of 50K.
S4=50+k
A base A4 is in the 30's, we were comparing horsepower, so I had mentioned that the old S4's, which were 50K ish are at 250HP. Although a new body style 3.2 A4 can get up into the high 40's very quickly, but that's neither here nor there.
Your story about an A4 racing an STi is interesting, but not really valid in the context of this conversation, since we were pretty much talking about stock power, and "320-350" as you mentioned, is nowhere near stock.
I can't very well say "a civic is a much faster car than a Corvette because I knew this guy once that had a 500HP civic, and smoked corvettes left and right."
Plus, a lot of it has to do with the driver. A lot of people I know with STi's and other really fast cars don't push them. There's racing, and then there's RACING, if you know what I mean. The only fair comparison as far as speed is on a closed course, with comparable drivers.
