the offical drivers 'flexing' thread

Ok first off this is not intended to be a street racing thread.. this is a thread about other drivers that try to instagate you into a race or try to show off around you just because your car looks, sounds, and or is mean.

After I installed my exhaust the tone excentuated my normally agressive driving style by making my engine rpm more noticable to other drivers.. I guess this is viewed as intimadating by other drivers because they find dumb ways to try to impress me.

last friday some guy in a 240 with an exhaust kept on speeding up and slowing down next to me to show off his exaust as i just puttered along at a stedy clip.. It started to get annoying so i wated for him to fall back again (ferther than he normaly did) and i jumped in the lane infront of him... others must have been anoyed because no one let him around...

yesterday an alero started paceing me and then cut me off.. he had his windows tinted and an exahust... well he stayed infront of me thru traffic... well this road is 2 lane then makes a 90degree left over a road... well traffic cleared and he punched it... I decided to play with this one..
so we both approch this turn he turns in a little wide.. I heal toe it into second and start to take the inside line.. well he eather hit the ebreak or just did not expect the back end to get loose but he got sidewase going into this turn... i held off of it because i was expecting him to shoot across the inside lane and smack the wall to the left... well he sure enough shot over into the inside lane and saved it before he hit the wall ... well as soon as he got into the lane i was in i jumped over into the outside and passed him easily laughing the whole time... almost biffed his car because he was showing off.

and today in traffic on the way home there was a passat 2 lanes to my left that was winding his car way out 5-6K per shift in slow moving trafic... well his lane slowed and i went ferther ahead. then the lane directly to my left cleared so he jumped in it and about my rear quorter he banged his rev limiter and he finaly shifted right next to my door...and suprise suprize he had an after market Blow off valve... most likley apc!!

I bring these storys and this thread up simply because this is not just 3 storys this has happened almost every day sence I put the exhaust on... the odd thing is i dont find this annoying I am simply amused at out stupid these people look trying to one up me... that and Almost every one That i talked to when thinking of buying this car has said that i will catch so much $hit from the domestic guys for driving an import but the funny thing is its almost always imports trying to one up me.

so any one else got storys like this?

Nope, I ignore tools on the road. It doesn't insult my manhood when some kid pulls up alongside and stares me down or revs on me. <yawn>

Sometimes if I have my camera with me, I'll try to snap some pics but I've never been fast enough before they get bored and take off. I plan to post them in a 'tool' thread.

thats kinda what i had in mind for this ^^^
I have only bit a couple of times when jurks start trying to mess with me... I just ment this to be a thread where we could all laugh at how much of tools these people are...
Like this morning
a stock gmc HD pickup was next to me in traffic and insted of taking off smooth he would floor it and slam on the breaks when ever traffic would move a bit.
then when things started to clear he started cutting people off right left and center to try to get ferther ahead of me (my lane was moving faster). then when my lane stopped he slipped his truck into nutral reved it and then dropped it into drive while still revving it witch created a squack noise then a couple of back fires then he took off...
I was lauging so hard i could barley see the road!!

This is actually a pretty common thread topic, but it always gets "binned" in the dumptser after a while because of too much street racing talk...

Even with a totally stock WRX (with the exception of 17" wheels) I get tools screwing with me all the time. You must understand that as a man approaching "middle age" and with a wife and progeny to protect, I have no interest in ending my life in a pile of crumpled metal just because some punk-*** kid revved his engine at me, so I never respond in kind to these people; trying to respond to a tool makes you a tool, and street racing is for morons.

That being said, I do have a few stories to share. My favorites always involve people who drive aggressively in totally inappropriate vehicles, like a '98 Cavalier, a Geo Metro or a Saturn Ion -- vehicles that were MARKETED as being "sporty" and yet are absolutely not sporting in any fashion. The Focus ZX, Toyota Matrix and any Grand Am are also common offenders in this sense. I see these types of cars (in stock trim, not modded) weaving in and out of traffic at 80mph all the time.

My (least) favorite tool behavior is the "pacer" -- someone in a riced-out car who tries to get on your nerves by matching speed with you, hoping that they can get the jump on you when you eventually get pissed and downshift. These are pretty common on the highway, typically in the form of a Civic, CRX or Integra but also in SUV form. I had a CRX stick right on my tail in the left lane for almost 20 minutes, matching my speed exactly and staying about 1 foot from my bumper. I just cruised along at a sedate 70 MPH (65 is the limit) the entire time. Every time he had an opportunity to pass he dove out into the center lane, and every time I would just gently tap the pedal and move up to 72 MPH, cutting off his attempt to pass by drawing even with another car in the center lane. I did this for the entire time, "stuffing" him at least six times. Finally he hit his brakes, peeled across three entire lanes and dove into an exit lane with about ten feet to spare from a big pile of water barrels. Tool indeed!

I also had a hilarious encounter with a VW Passat. In V6 form, this is not a painfully slow car; in fact on the highway they are quite competitive. However, they can't handle in town. There's a nice long, curvy road near my house rated at 50 MPH (we have 50 MPH surface streets right through town here, perhaps one reason why Arizona holds many records for traffic fatalities -- 50 MPH and no center divider!). This guy in the Passat peeps my WRX and takes off from the light full bore, while I drive normally, shifting at about 4000 RPM (no more than 10PSI of boost). For almost twenty miles he sped far ahead of me, only to chicken out on the turns and slam his brakes; meanwhile I stuck to just above the speed limit and took the turns without braking (thanks to some non-factory tire grip). At every turn, I caught up to him completely and even passed him on the inside twice, as he tried to thrash that heavy German car through the turns. I never went WOT once the entire time and yet by the third traffic light he was far behind -- driver skill and the inherent abilities of the car itself will conquer a "tool," every time.

Oh, except for that Ferrari that burned my *** in the acceleration lane a few days ago

This all sounds good, but the rest of your post says otherwise...

I think making a thread about this gives these 'ricers' way too much acknowlegement... If you ignored them and went along your way, you probably wouldn't have so many 'encounters.' Just another reason to go for the sleeper look...

not to meantion ward off cop attention... and in the bay area riced out turbo charged civics are a dime a dozen. Even in my stock looking wagon, except for my 17's and if you can see my blue endlinks or sway bar, I get challenged all the time.

The reason I have a stock exhaust is because I don't want unnecessary attention from the fuzz and I don't want what you described above to happen to me any more than it already does. I find SUV's are usually the ones to play games, but ocassionally I also get a ricer who fixates on me.

edit: D'OH! Subabu05 beat me to the cop comment!

You might want to read the part about how I stuck to the speed limit the entire time again, because you seem to have missed it; you also missed the part about how my car is stock, which is indeed the "sleeper look." The WRX and STI have a reputation for being badass from the factory; they don't need vinyl flames, a fartcan exhaust and underbody neon to attract attention, any more than a Porsche 911 or Corvette does.

I agree that a lot of folks know the WRX is pretty quick from the factory, but to put it in 911 or Corvette territory is a bit much, imho.

Also, when that CRX was following you for 20 minutes, it *almost* sounds like you were cruising in the passing lane, playing games with him, and not allowing him to pass. I say almost, because I wasn't there...but not allowing someone to pass is inconsiderate and incites road rage. Something to think about.

yeah but im acknowlegeing that they are funny morons!!I just like to laugh at them.

and he never said that he raced those people... mearly stuffled the one guy off as normal traffic and the other guy was simply him keeping a normal clip while the other guy is trying his best to loose him.

I was never into street racing in my firbird/camero days other than with my friends on abandond roads. Now i dont see the point in the risk .. I will do just about any thing not to have to talk to a cop.
I just love watching people that are dumb enough to try to get me to race.. and about after market parts on my car... I dont care who it is .. Im going to do what ever i want to my car when ever i want to . I modify my car because I want to and im not going to let any one incourage or discourage me to do something. Where I'm sitting right now with the subaru is im using it as a platform to test out new things i have never done before (welding, custom fiberglass work, paint, body work ect..). Inbetween all that stuff I am improving things that i dont like about it (how it handeled and how slow it was were the two big ones).

so yeah nuff of that crap ... who else has 'tool tails'

The WRX is better than a Porche, Lamborghini, Corvette, Bentley, and any SUV... But it can't possibly be better than a Toyota Prius...

Can it?

No, it can't.

But it might be.

Wait, yes...

...it's coming to me.

It is!

And I will now reply to my own thread, because I just finished a research paper and am OVER life ... Yes, I feel better now, I can post stupid things and as long as they inflict no harm, danger, or posses rather illegal material I am fine.

No, I'm not.

Yes, you are!

No, really I'm not.

But you are.

playing with tools on the road is street racing in my point of view.

my car's slow so i don't even have the temptation to "play"

but there are many a ricer who will still rev, stare, or jockey with me trying to instigate something. i never do anything other than laugh and mind my own business.

one particular story i do have though... i was waiting at a light, and i notice there is a 3rd gen silver eclipse, on black wheels, in the opposing lanes. on the other side of the intersection. i'm not looking at the car or anything but when the light turns green and i start putt putt putting away in first, driving normally, this idiot in the eclipse launches and it's apparent that he has catless, resonatorless exhaust with some cheap muffler and what sounds like a very loud turbo kit on the new eclipse(which doesn't come turbo). the whole time that he is revving, chirping the front wheels, and gunning it across the intersection, he's staring at me like he just caught me having extramarital sex with his mother. he looked about 17-18.

i just raised an eyebrow with the  expression on my face... but yeah, having an impreza(especially one with a front bumper) attracts all the wrong kinds of attention.

man, Lay of the learnin and kick up the drinkin'. You have the most advanced case of repressed multipul personality resurficing I have ever seen!!

I actully think its a bit of a complament when some one tries to impress me while driving... it means they think my car looks good or intimadating. lets me know im doing something right... does get a bit annoying at times... Like when girls just constently hit on you when your out with your friends trying to enjoy a night out.
