My opinion on painted wheels
My opinion on painted wheels
Only on silver or black cars, Doesn't have to match exactly. Gold wheels only go on blue subarus (and the owner must know why). No chrome ever. EVER!!! all others must use silver, any shade is good. Feel free to prove me wrong, my mind is open.

maybe you don't like it, but i fully support varience of colors and styles as long as it-
1. doesn't affect wheel weight to a noticable degree(chrome does suck, you're right)
2. doesn't provide a wheel that looks worse(white wheels show brake dust like wedding linens show virgins, darker the better)
3. doesn't defeat its own purpose or look worse than normal.
by number three i mean that a white car should not have rims with polished lips, unless the lips are deep dish or the color of the wheels is contrasting(black).
i also mean that a color meant to set the car apart from others shouldn't be something done before.
for instance, if every car with magnesium blue wheels was white like Versus', they would be imitating. however, put magnesium blue on a sedona red and you have an ultra unique ride, like it or leave it.
my bronze wheels are close enough to gold subaru wheels(as per 555 cigarette heritage) that they can claim rally heritage as a justification but still dark enough to hide brake dust(the reason i painted them). I also like they look of bronze on white.
i'm sure that there is a plain and simple difference of opinion here, and i'm not trying to prove anything to you, i just hope that my post can explain my thinking to you.
i agree, painting wheels should not be done unless the owner knows why he's doing it...
but to say that the blue/gold combo is the only combo that can claim rally heritage is being a little too conservative in your opinion. sure, 555 cigarettes came in blue and yellow packages... and sure, people claiming this heritage should know the reasons why... but to say that ONLY blue cars can claim that is too strict for my tastes. the cigarettes were blue/yellow. the cars had gold wheels. it's not a betrayal of SWRT heritage to put the gold wheels on another car.
and the whole JDM idea- like magnesium blue or takata green on the wheels... it's up to you. if you want to be THAT unique, go for it- but make sure you're being unique.
i painted my wheels after i saw the neon green winter wheels on the silver bugeye... i contemplated that look, but felt that if i were to do something that attention grabbing, it BETTER be original. and copying something you saw on the internet is not original.
to date i have not seen another bugeye RS with my combination of a JUN front and bronze wheels. my car turns heads. more so than i ever intended it to... but i'm proud of the fact that no matter how 'rice' people think it may be, it's unique and clean. you won't find an aluminum spoiler on my ride. you won't find flashy neons or other garishly unclean visual mods. you will find a ride that is all about subaru. sure it's slow, sure the front bumper is HUGE but i have my reasons for everything i do. besides, my front is going to change DRASTICALLY in the upcoming months:devil:
everyone's entitled to their opinion. this post expresses mine. feel free to respond and remember, if i challenge your own opinion, i am doing so solely for the purpose to relay where i am coming from! please do not take it personally or judge my opinions in a way that oversteps the bounds of your own influence.
I hope this thread sees many more replies!

I can't stand silver wheels personally... wouldn't put them on any color car. Gold wheels go with any subaru except red or yellow. Black, white, blue, green, CGM... it's all good with gold, because I know why.
Chrome is right out. Gunmetal/anthracite and bronze are also great choices, and I had white wheels on my blue ridge pearl coupe. Hey shutup, it looked sweet!
Personal choice there, I know... but like I said, I'll never put painted silver wheels on a car again.

Personal choice there, I know... but like I said, I'll never put painted silver wheels on a car again. The SSRs are bright silver painted one-piece alloy with a machined lip. The silver matches the gloss present on the paint. The machined lip has an iridescent appearance that will match any color, because is will reflect all the colors of the visible spectrum. The machined lip matches or compliments any color scheme.
That's just the esthetics of matching and complimentary color and it's an esthetic that's practiced in many cultures.
As for the Krylon flat black STi, the day-glow or flat black sprayed wheels... this practice has more to do with making a social and political statement reflecting an origin in economic necessity than esthetics. But, that doesn't make the Krylon look wrong, it's just proof that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

It's not that silver clashes... I just don't like it. Looks... plain I guess. Same with white and silver cars. They look cheap to me. White or silver = rental. Not coincidentally, the rented chevy Cobalt I'm driving is silver.

My $.05 (I'm too long winded for just $.02)
silver/polished aluminum is fine by me. I wouldent trust painted rims to stand the test of time im more of a powdercoated fan my self.
gold/bronz could look good on the right shade of red
chrom only belongs on hot rods and 70's muscle
and gun metal with a polished lip would look money on a red two door subaru thats sitting in my driveway!!

I would just rather powder coat... Im sure there is nothing wrong with factory paint on rims, but if some one was to paint there rims themselfs or even professionaly painted ... i just dont think they will hold up as well as powder coating.
