Stage II 06 WRX
hp 224.8 @ 5400
tq 271.1 @ 3000
Stock 04 STI
hp 238.0 @ 5300
tq 248.2 @ 4500
given the fact that the WRX is a 5 speed, i dont see why it WOULDNT take an STI in a sprint to 60... i would suspect it to run along side an STI to 1320... thereafter though, i can see how an STI may slowly walk away from it...
I dunno, just makes sense to me.. with all that usable torque and less gears to row... acceleration like that is almost expected

I'm sorry but there is no way in hell they can get 271 ft/lbs ATW from running stage 2 on a TD04 w/ just a 3" TBE and no other serious mods...no way.

Lets think about it logically... SAME motor as the STI... the turbocharger is NOT the same BUT... youre talking about reprogrammed maps/ higher flowing exhaust pieces
to be honest, it sounds VERY logical to me, and people who are doing their own dynos are reinforcing COBBs claims... COBB is an excellent company and many people back their products... im sure if you get it Pro Tuned, the results will be even more...

808subaru - I agree with you, its really an incredible offering... it sounds like the torque is reduced in the first 2 gears, but they say 3rd gear is something that truly needs to be experienced. it does a sprint from 48-75 mph in like 3.5 seconds which is phenomenal, its said to be faster than the 911 carrera
The following is through a google search, this is what I came up with...
WHEELS says it can sprint faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera...3.6 sec
Holden HSV GTO (Pontiac GTO)...3.8 sec
Aston Martin V8 Vantage 4.0 sec
Falcon XR6 Turbo 4.0 sec
Subaru Impreza WRX 4.2 sec.
And the Mazda 3 MPS only needs 4.1 seconds to perform the same feat in Fourth!
Standing Start
0-60 k/m 3.4sec (36MPH)
0-80 4.6 (48MPH)
0-100 6.6sec (60MPH) (Mazda claims 6.1)
0-120 8.8 (72MPH)
0-140 11.1 (84MPH)
0-160 14.9 (96MPH)
0-400 metre (1/4 Mile) in 14.6 @158 k/m
WHEELS claim its one of the fastest FWD cars EVER!!!
I'm hoping that these numbers arent finalized... track conditions were supposed to be horrible, and problems with test equipment, etc... id like to see a sub 6 0-60 time, and at least a low 14 time... eitherway, im gonna go by feeling, if it shares the thrust of an srt-4, im down...
cant wait for it to hit the shores so i can test drive one

haha cmon now... its no slug... its a very nice commuter with a great punch to it... hauls ***... i dont need the fastest thing on the road... besides i can do without the image the STi brings with it... although the mazdaspeed 3 is also the factory tuned version of a vehicle, its a lot more subtle on the exterior...
Oh... AN UPDATE TO EVERYONE... the most ironic thing has come to my realization...
so im doing some research on the speed6 last night, and guess whos hands i find in the cookie jar? COBB tuning... thats right... the company i so love and respect who has done incredible things for the subaru communitee is actually working on reverse engineering the speed6s system... I literally jumped for joy (as homo an act as it was) I couldnt believe what I was reading... btw, this was an emailed response DIRECTLY from Trey Cobb to a ms6 owner who was asking about products... the irony of it is how much i respect/appreciate what cobb has done and continues to do for the subaru community... their product was a LARGE decision factor in my purchasing a WRX, and someone was bashing it earlier in this forum...
I for one am THRILLED to hear this, albiet it will be months and months down the line, im confident that they will have products for the speed3 and possibly the cx-7 as well, considering that the engine is the same in these 3 cars...
COBB if youre reading this... Id really love to know if you guys will be doing a CA-91 specific map down the line... im sure its way too early to even ask such a question, but it would considerably eliminate the issues california owners are having with their speed 6s, and possibly the speed3...
also, i wonder if the torque reduction ive heard about in the first 2 gears is done by the ecu... im guessing that will definitely be effed with... Cant wait to check out some maps from christian.... yippee!!!!!!
haha, i know, i know, im getting WAY ahead of myself...

The Mazdaspeed 3 shares the same engine and ecu as the Mazdaspeed 6 although the ECU is detuned in gears 1-3 to allow the somewhat advanced torque controlled front diff to work it's magic and keep the wheels moving the car without scrambling for traction. Well that is what someone told me anyway

regarding the STI motor vs WRX motor, i meant its essentially same, ive read about some components being made with different materials, etc.. just in regards to the point i was making, they are both 2.5L boxer motors capable of similar feats... probably not for long amounts of time in a WRX, but essentially the same.. it is afterall their corporate engine...
your information is correct...
I believe the ECU detune can be overcome when Cobb gets their paws on it... In fact, i just cant see them leaving it alone. I can expect smoother response, etc, with more power...

Different dyno runs are going to say different things. Real world performance/comparison is what is key. Don't get me wrong, COBB AP is great and is what I run, but their dyno numbers are always on the highside and who wouldn't just make it look just right to sell a little more product.
The TD04 is just a smaller turbo, sure it spools quicker at lower RPM but the VF39 just flows more throughout and will take less effort to make the same or more power...plus if you push the TD04 too much you are just blowing hot air.

Just picked up the new Sport Compact Car... The Speed3 is featured on the cover... not just that, they got exclusive track testing behind the wheel during mazdas "final production confirmation"... although no numbers were recorded (or published, i should say) they wrote about how the car feels, etc... this is sounding EXTREMELY promising... apparently even with the torque limiting PCM, the car is still able to smoke tires without any effort... I also read on a mazda3 forum that MT approximated the 0-60 at 5.8... If thats true, I am thoroughly impressed... this sounds like something that will hang with SRTs in the straight and absolutely swallow them in corners... Hell, in dry conditions I'm willing to bet this can handle pretty close to STi territory...
With 263 horses @ 5500rpm and 280 ft-lbs at 3000 rpm.... I am thoroughly impressed with the overall package!

it looks to me like you had your mind made up from the first post. so why don't you go to the mazda dealer already! bah, who needs ya anyway! lol j/k. i think their wagon's styling is superior to the impreza. i just don't dig the rear end of the impreza wagons for some reason. the outback and legacy wagons look just fine to me. it seems like the impreza wagon is the ugly duckling of them all.
(no disrespect to any impreza wagon owners of course).

Yeah man, haha... I dunno, the more info thats leaking out prior to the release is just exciting me even further, and word is that COBBs gonna be working on tuning it too... I dunno... itll be hard leaving this community... though I never got to know anybody really personally here, its been a great group of easy going, humble individuals out to help...
Im on some mazda boards now, and I tell ya... its nothing like this place... you got ego-heads, people who dont know info- yet pretend to.. etc etc... I guess Ill never find another I-club, but yeah... i might stop by to help people randomly... its what made this place so awesome...
Take care!

Mazda virtually reinvented what good handling is with the FD3s. And they seem to have perfected the FWD drivetrain. Leguna Seca is their proving ground. Can't get much better than that. I have total faith that the new Mazdaspeed 3 will be the Barry Sanders of FWD cars.
Barry Sanders = definitely not the fastest but maybe the hardest to catch
The WRX is no slouch either. But it doesn't have great handling, it just has incredible grip. Two seemingly similar, yet very different traits. Where somthing like an RX-7 will simply drive through a corner, a standard WRX will just bully the corner and beat it into submission till theres a strait line again. Both very confident inspiring aspects of a car, but one of them just happens to make that corner disapear a little faster. I'm not doing a very good job explaining this, but some, if not most of you know what I mean.
*And for clarification, Ford used Mazda, not the other way around. I can't speak for the past couple years, but that's the way it was.
**Those magazine tests of WRXs running 0.82g on the skid pad has a great deal to do with those terrific RE92 tires. There's a few 1/10s of a g hiding underneath those tires.
*** I (like the SCC editors) would like to see a (Caliber)SRT-4 vs Mazdaspeed 3 match up.... any takers???
