Magnet on your oil filter ?

Wrap your brains around this one. . . .

My friends dad, who has somewhat knowledge of cars, has always put a magnet on his oil filter.

He says it catches any metal flakes that may be in the engine.

Give me some feedback, facts, or stories related to this. I don't think its B.S. but I am not sure that it does anything. Thanks in advance for replys

I've seen magnetic drain bolts that do the same at the bottom of the oilpan, but not at the filter.

edit* and it does catch stuff from what i've seen.

Magnetic drain plugs do work. They even make magnetic drain plugs for some transmissions and differentials.

Magnets on the outside of the oil filter aren't necessary - that's what the filter is for. It won't hurt anything, either, so if it makes your friend's dad feel better...

oil filters are designed just for that purpose- i would imagine in the old school days some of the filters didn't exactly do their job well-

i was wondering what happens if the magnet keeps all the metal fragments in one section... and if so would it inhibit the natural flow that the oil is supposed to take?

Isn't there a magnet on the tranny drain plug? I guess this is just because it doesn't pass thru a filter like the engine oil.
