Wink Leaving VW's 1.8t & VR6 For STI...

Well thats the plan, but have 1 of the 2 cars sold. The 1.8t basically was my garage queen being parked most of the time (2500 miles in 1yr), and since moving to the beach for the summer it stayed home out of the sun and salt air as well. Recently decided its time after having 2 cars for about 4yrs to go down to 1. I was debating on the R32 originally until my buddy who left his 450hp S4 recently for a 05 STI talked me into considering a STI.

So I just sold my 20th on ebay, got payment today and when thats delivered gotta move this 97 DE GTI VR6. Both cars are awesome, I've owned every VW you can imagine watercooled wise (Click link below for pics of some of these - A2 Jettas one with VR6 swap, cage, recaros u name it, 1.8t modded nice in the 20th, Supercharged VR6, G60 in my Corrado, had em all even Rabbit GTI's) and I was cautious to leave em like leaving any car company you've been around your whole life.

I realize subarus are strong cars, probably more reliable than VW's when modded heavily, and I realize the STI is the baddest thing for 30k as it sits stock, so it was worth considering. I can't get into the racer styling it has but that's WRC I guess, and the VW R32 is more comfort convenience oriented. Anyway I have until September till I move my 97 GTI VR6, so hopefully that sells and I can do the STI . I'm aiming for the 05 for a few reasons I heard improvements with fender flares, ecu octane fix, wheel bearing issue fix ie change 5x114, and nicer interior amenities. I guess if the deal is to good to pass I'll get the silver 04 but I have my eyes on a white 05 for now. Time will tell...in the meantime just wanted to introduce myself, no more BadAsslilGTI, moving onto the BadAssLilSTI

Here's some of my old projects...enjoy and hope to be talking with you guys soon if all works out, worst case scenario i'll get a R32 and harass ya in one of those

More pics at www.hometown.aol.com/badasslilgti Lemme know what you guys think....

I'm an ex-VW'er also. Subies are way easier to mod than VWs. I bolted on strut braces on my WRX in about 30-minutes, where I had to drill holes in my VW to mount them. What a pain that was. The doors don't feel as solid as german cars, but the rest of the car seems pretty strong.

It's common on the boards to hear about guys swapping trunks (STI's with standard WRX trunks/wing or no wing at all) since your not into the boxy wing. I'm sure you could make a little extra cash on the swap. Just a thought. There are plenty of options to tone down the STI styling and still get the performance.

I'm glad a fellow dubber chimed in. Yea VW's aren't the easiest of cars to mod, but I guess the bright side is everything would only get easier with the STI since I'm told there easy to work on comin from a ex S4 owner who did all his work. I'm anxious that the deal goes thru, it could happen sooner than I expected. I don't think I'd swap trunks but rather the hoods since I'm not sure about the floppy scoop at 105mph. Then more reason for a fmic from APS in black.

I see. The STI has the biggest scoop of them all. The WRX has a lower profile one...and if you go with the FMIC, you might get the 2.5RS hood with no venting at all.

Good luck and (possibly) welcome!

Unless it was changed this year, the RS hoods are standard steel, while the WRX/STi hoods are aluminum, meaning MUCH lighter than the RS hood. And the scoop has no problems at high speeds - people have taken their STi well over 120 with no problems. Subaru didn't just secure it with double side tape

O well in that case put me down for stock hood for good I rarely drive that fast anyway but it's just nice to know everything is solid ya know? I dunno I'll decide when it happens, and looks like it will within a month or so, but in meantime keepin the fingers crossed. I'm debating if it's really worth sellin both VW's and droppin an additional 16k on top of my 15 down tho Driving my VR6 home tonite, it sings quite a nice song I dont think the boxer engine will ever be able to do, but I'm hoping the other cool features will make up for that and then some...

I've never gotten a ride in a VR6, but the boxer in stock form, and especially with a nice exhaust is the best sound I've heard short of a Ferarri 360 Modena at WOT.

edit: best car sound, that is.

I am not the biggest VW fan, but I do think the GTI styling is classic, and I have heard some VR6's which simply sound sublime. Like really, really nice.

Track 10 instead of Track 3 right?

VR6's for those that have heard or driven one do sing one of the best songs for anything in the price range it can't be beat. I'd be glad to admit if this STI does in fact sing a better note tho, esp being compared to a Ferrari, but shouldnt it be more along the lines of a Porsche...ie Boxer engine??? Either way Porsche, Ferrari it'll do I guess

I've never gotten to hear a Porsche open it up. I was at an autox and was course working when a 360 ran. Oh, man. I got wood everytime he floored it on the straight at my station.
