Impreza rear seat is CRAZY small
I was serious about an OBS until I drove one tonight...
Everything about it was awesome.....except that back seat!
Even with my drivers seat moved up as much as I could bear, the room in the seat behind it was not comfortable for me. I felt like my knees were in my chest and I'm 5'6"!
How do you guys deal with that?
I am heartbroken because I think this is going to be a deal breaker for me...
WTF was Subaru thinking?!?

OTH, the back seat of a Legacy Outback is exceedingly comfortable! Perhaps you should look at a used Outback for around the same money as a new OBS.

I had a Jetta. It wasn't worse.
The legroom is almost identical on paper, but the rear of the seat is "carved out" more so there is just a little more knee room.
Still too small though.
At the risk go getting mercilessly flamed, I test drove a new Corolla. It's a subcompact too, but it's got excellent rear legroom. I can cross my legs while sitting in the back!
Still it's no Subaru
Maybe I'll look at a Legacy and think about that. At this point though, it looks like I may be going with the Honda CRV. I know, I know the AWD system is inferior to the Subaru, but I will be living in AZ so it should not be an issue. The CRV has about 6 inches (literally) more legroom which is a huge difference. The ground clearance is slightly better than a Forester. Don't hate me guys.

And when you were in the back of the Impreza, was the seat cranked down or up? It helps with foot/leg room if the seat isnt all the way down to the floor.

Car Info: Not a WRX any more . . .
I'm 5'7" and the back seat (of the WRX anyway) seemed ok to me. But I haven't spent much time back there. The back seat of my 2000 Jetta is better, but there are so many other reasons not to get a Jetta. The back seat of a Prelude is crazy small, not built for humans.
I haven't driven a CRV so I can't really comment on that, but how often do you have a car full of people? If it's not really often, I'd say get something you like that people can fit in if they have to. Don't get something you will be unhappy with every day so that your three times a year passengers will be slightly more comfortable. You're giving them a ride, how much can they really complain?
Edit: I actually spent several hours in the back seat yesterday, and it was fine, no complaints. Especially since I installed the cup holders! But I was sitting behind my wife, and she's shorter than I am, so the front seat was pretty far forward.

The impreza backseat is small but manageable for short trips for me and I'm fairly tall(6'). If you want to see no room, try a Mazda MX-3. My older brother had one and My head would hit the roof in the back seat. Plus the backseat had these weird "depressions" that you sat in and it was nearly vertical in the back. Insanely small.
Here's a pic I found, not the best but it gives you an idea of how small it was.

The back seats do matter to me because I often drive co-workers to lunch when we go out and I like to go hiking etc. with friends. The Jetta was a PITA when taking people anywhere and I don't want to deal with that in my next vehicle. I did move the front seat in the OBS up and out of the way as much as possible to where I could still drive and the space in the back was still unacceptable.
Another big plus with the CRV for me is that you can put bikes in the back upright, which is alot nicer than having to mess with a bike rack when you ride as often as I do.
The back seat is extremely roomy for the size of the vehicle, I can sit in the back and actually cross my leg when sitting.
The back seats slide back and also recline.
Bikes:
Anyway... I still love Subaru big time. My first car was an '87 XT! I'm pretty sure I will buy another Subaru again someday, they just don't have *exactly* what I need right now.
Maybe the next Forester will have back seats and room for bikes inside like the CRV--- give me that and Subaru's AWD and the Forester XT engine and I would be in love.
Thanks for all the input though.

I didn't find the H6 very inspiring though. It is very smooth, but its kind of slug around town. The transmission seems very unwilling to downshift or stay in a low gear. On the highway it had good power and was quite nice, but in traffic it did not feel any faster than the 2.5. I wasn't that happy with the handling either. If they made one with the H6 and a 5 speed that would probably do the trick, then I could throw some STI springs on there and I'd be set. It's still *very* expensive though and I would not have the huge back area to load two bikes in like the CRV. Hmmmm.
Close but no cigar. Awesome cars both. Just not exactly what I need.
What I need is a Forester with a high roof and about 5 inches more rear legroom!
The CRV with it's wussy AWD is the closest I can come to that without buying a giant SUV with 14 mpg and that would be out of my price range anyway.

Ya, I liked the CR-V interior alot too when I checked it out. I was impressed, but most Honda interiors are rather good (however ive always thought the Accords felt too much like a ford taurus interior, but thats just me)
However, I just love the new Forester interiors! It feels great just driving the car around being in that interior, especially the XT and its very nice cloth seats.

Everytime I'm behind a CRV all I can look at is the rear suspension components. The whole car has good clearance... and then there are these axles and lower susp. arms just sitting there completely exposed. In my opinion, this vehicle is most certainly not designed to go offroad.

I'm with Monkey, especially on the old CRV, the axels hung down so low that I can't imagine taking over a something more than a big pot hole. My buddy has an 03 CRV and I'll admit it's a comfortable car, but I just have such a problem with SUVs in general, especially one that is based off the Honda Civic platform. Present company excluded(since it seems prawn will do some biking and other outdoorsy activities) it seems like most of the people who buy these are just after the status symbol that the SUV has become but don't have enough money to buy the real deal. As I said, present company excluded since it seems like Prawn will use it for some utility and trail type stuff. I dunno, I'm just so anti SUV I don't even like these little ones, hell even the Forester is a bit iffy in my book.
