The Subaru dealer near my place said WRX is supercharged...

Those dealer sales people don't really know what they are selling, sometimes they are just college kids who's working part time. It's always fun to mess with them though.

Not to split hairs here, people, but a turbocharger IS a supercharger that runs off of exhaust gas, is it not?
I don't disagree that many car salesman don't know their product...

I had a "salesman" at a local nissan dealer tell me that the VVT on the engine block of the Sentra SE-R stood for "Variable Value Transmission" HAHA

Why the hell would you take a job SELLING a product that you know nothing about it!? Good thing there are as many stupid people buy cars as there are sell them, otherwise he'd be out of the job!!

No I think they are both compressors where one runs off of exhaust gas and the other off an accessory belt or gears.

supercharger Definition: Also called a "blower," a supercharger is a device that forces more air and fuel into the engine to increase horsepower. Unlike a turbocharger (See Turbocharger), a supercharger is belt or gear driven and provides instant boost pressure to the engine at all speeds.

Turbo charger Definition: An exhaust driven pump that compresses intake air and forces it into the combustion chambers at higher than atmospheric pressures. The increased air pressure allows more fuel to be burned and results in increased horsepower being produced.

I'll defer to your definition, Peaty, as you are the man! But according to Merriam-Webster on line the definition of supercharger is:
a device (as a blower or compressor) for pressurizing the cabin of an airplane or for increasing the volume air charge of an internal combustion engine over that which would normally be drawn in through the pumping action of the pistons.

Back on topic - just because a particular sales person is clueless does not necessarily mean the dealership sucks. When I was shopping for a dealership to buy my WRX from, I asked the salesman at Santa Cruz Subaru when they would be getting some in, how much would they charge, is their a list, etc. This was Dec 2001, a few months before the WRX was available. The salesman's response was, "What's a WRX. I've never heard of that!?!" I bought my car elsewhere and now I know Santa Cruz is the best dealership in the area!

They do the same thing in principle yes, but the execution is different. One is parasitic and the other isn't, one doesn't have lag the other does.

We have a Mitsu dealer just up the block from my Scooby dealer. I've seen two Evo's there. I've been tempted to stop by but haven't. I was surprised when my dealer, the owner, had never heard of the Evo at all. I've usually found the Subaru salesman relatively up on things compared to other places. At least at my dealership anyway.

The local Honda Dealer was the reason I started getting Scoobies again. When I moved here from PA I had a 96 Jeep XJ that I would take off road a lot. Out here in Kansas there was no need for it, no mountains in site So I wanted to trade it for something my wife could have but still wanted 4WD/AWD. We looked at the CRV at the local Honda Dealer. They were such A@@ holes I was turned off right away. They acted like it was a privilege for me to be able to get a Honda, if they were nice enough to let me purchase one from them. I went to the Scooby dealer up the street. They were very nice and treated me very well. I ended up with a new 97 Outback. I hope to go back this month for my 4 new Scooby from them if I can swing it. I'm liking the XT a lot
