Ford's STi Killer?
In my opinion this is a sweet car. And if it was out I think I would seriously consider it over the STi if it was in the same price range: Ford 2.0 L Zetec E engine. 4-cylinder, 16 valve, 2-litre. Electronic Ford engine management system. Garret turbocharger 300bhp at 6500RPM.
Has anyone else heard anything about this as a possibility?

Ford Focus RS
The Ford Focus RS is already available in Europe.......front wheel drive, turbocharged, 212 bhp, 229 lb/ft torque 1278 kg curb weight, equivalent of $30k USD, 0-60 mph 6.3 sec. This is currently mixing it with the likes of the WRX, Golf R32, Seat Leon Cupra R etc....but is no competition for the STi.
The Cosworth variant of the Focus would obviously be the STi's competitor, but as far as I can tell there are no plans for a UK Focus Cosworth, at least as far out as '05 model year (I guess an SVT equivalent is even less likely).

focus rs is AWD isn't it, the rally car is awd so wouldn't production be that way??
also every ford i ever owned is reliable. not to sound dumb but in 34 years when there is a svx or wrx or rs still running and worth some good cash then we can talk about reliability. but they dont build em like they used to

Its been in Europe for about two seasons as the RS and its FWD only. Also there are zero plans for Ford to import it to the US.
Currently Ford has their eyes on the SUV & pick-up prize.
But you never know for sure.
Get you and about 10,000 of your closest friends to send their product manager an e-mail and maybe they'll get the RS here for ya by Christmas. Maybe not.
Even if it were avilable state side, there is no way I would pass over Subaru's build quality and _extreme_ durability to buy a Ford Focus hopped on Folger's crystals with an intercooler.
Plus, Ford isn't exactly known for having any kind of AWD system that is both effective and durable.
I'd buy a hopped up Mitsubishi Lancer with big brakes (EVO)before betting the farm on a Ford anything.
Oh, and in case you forgot about how relaible Subies can be.
Checkout this 'Rally' vid of a normal late '80's GL Wagon imitating the
General Lee. Unlike the real General Lee, they didn't need tens of stunt doubles after each jump & take. This Subie took it like Tyson and kept coming back for more.
Subaru owns Ford...

^^ yeah, it is. As far as the WRC is concerned, I unfortunately think the Impreza platform has some fundemental issues that hold back its performance compared to the new generation of rally cars like the focus and peugeot 206. The shorter rounder cars are proving more effective time and time again on the WRC. The more boxy cars like citreon, Lancer, Impreza I don't think will be around on the WRC circuit in two years.
...I wish that Cosworth Focus was here.

Here's a Ford vid for folks to Focus on.
But seriously, the WRC Focus is a nice machine and quite impressive. Smaller wheelbase competitors are in fact making it tough for Subie though they continue to be competitive.
All the while Skoda may want to re-think that big BMW 540 looking sedan they campaign.
