BMWˇ¦S MINI COOPER, ALREADY headed for cult-car status in the United States, will get another boost later this year when the ragtop version of the 2003 North American Car of the Year arrives.

The electromechanically operated cloth roof retracts initially into an ˇ§open sunroofˇ¨ setting, and with a second prod of the control button folds and stows behind the rear seats. Roll hoops are added behind the rear seats.
As in Europe, Mini will introduce the 115-hp 1.6-liter convertible first, followed about nine months later by the supercharged 163-hp model. No official word yet on pricing, but we hear the cabrio will attract a premium of up to e 4000 (about $5,000) over the hardtop.

I'm still concerned about the low profile of the car, especially the rear bumper. Here in AZ, every third truck is "lifted" on 28-inch wheels and extended struts; some of them have bumper height even with the top of my trunk in my WRX. If one of those hits you from behind...
