First Look: Open-top Mini makes world debut at Geneva auto show

BMWˇ¦S MINI COOPER, ALREADY headed for cult-car status in the United States, will get another boost later this year when the ragtop version of the 2003 North American Car of the Year arrives.

Shown here for the first time in official photosˇXthough we published spy shots nearly a year ago (AW, March 10, 2003)ˇXthe open-top Mini makes its world debut at next monthˇ¦s Geneva motor show.

The electromechanically operated cloth roof retracts initially into an ˇ§open sunroofˇ¨ setting, and with a second prod of the control button folds and stows behind the rear seats. Roll hoops are added behind the rear seats.

As in Europe, Mini will introduce the 115-hp 1.6-liter convertible first, followed about nine months later by the supercharged 163-hp model. No official word yet on pricing, but we hear the cabrio will attract a premium of up to e 4000 (about $5,000) over the hardtop.

I'll give it a vote for Car Most Likely to be Crushed to a Cube by a Hummer...

I'd only get one if it had the supercharger. Otherwise its just a Cabrio with round headlights.

It's heftier than it looks. Weighs as much as a GC8.

Whoa! What did they build it out of, pig iron? If I want a small car that is that heavy, it better darn well be getting that weight from AWD and a really awesome suspension!

I'm still concerned about the low profile of the car, especially the rear bumper. Here in AZ, every third truck is "lifted" on 28-inch wheels and extended struts; some of them have bumper height even with the top of my trunk in my WRX. If one of those hits you from behind...
