Buying a rental return??
Hey y'all
Just wondering what everyone thinks about buying a rental return? ie. My sister is looking at a an '03 Alero with 20k miles. I wouldn't do it personally, but she'd like other opinions because I "don't know everything." Yeah, real mature.
Anyway, tell me what you think.
Thanks

What he said.
It really depends on the price, but you have to assume that the car has been ridden hard and put away wet.
I once rented a car from Enterprise, and as I was filling up the first time I decided to check under the hood. Well, it was about a quart low on oil. About a 100 miles later, the tranny got stuck in first gear. I wound up bouncing off the rev limiter in first gear on the freeway for 45 minutes or so until I got to a spot to call Enterprise.
Just an example of what can happen to a rental.

Be carful about buying a car that was a rental! I own a 99 Alero and trust me when I say You can do better! Now I'm not trying to knock my own car but this is a part of life! We drive what we don't want and dream about what we do want to drive....
If the car is a 03 Alero I'll give it more credit than my own, but get any kind of record from the rental Co that owned the car. The rental Co. will have record of any and almost everything that has been fixed or broken. Aleros from 2000 up until now are pretty solid, but check http://www.aleromod.com for more reference to your query....One more thing on the Alero, think about the availability of all parts for the Aleros, eventhough they're similar to Grand AMs and Malibus. GM no longer maunfactures Aleros!

hahaha, my friend just got a 2004 dodge dakota slt for a rental. thing had less than 1200 miles on it. he's the second guy renting it, boy, we were fishtailing out of almost every other turn we make. big torque, v8, rwd, floored the gas pedal....

OH MY GOD that nitroused rental neon thing is so ludicrous, i nearly hit the floor when i read this part:
that is horrible yet so funny
If i were you i'd NEVER EVER EVER buy a rental car, me any my bunch of hooligans have a rental car rule:
"Unseen Damage"
which means no hitting cones or poles or what not, but grants full permission for 60+ MPH speedbump hits and ever present impromptu E-brake turns and street drifting... Lets just say i'd trust any rental car to have been treated like some 16 year olds personal worlds wildest police chase victim at least once or twice.
Buy a used car from a nice grandma who doesn't know what NOS is and has never used the Emergency brake unless it was to park or in an emergency

P.S. Alero's aren't all that lovely anyway. An extra incentive for the kid who wrecked his civic hatch to abuse it like a red headed step car....
The high (low?) point came when "Crazy" Eddie Yeznaian, intrepid rally racer and wildebeest extraordinaire, actually power-braked the car to the floor, cut the wheel to the left, and hit the nitrous in reverse. Nothin' like nitrous doughnuts after a hard day at the office! (Since this was done in the rain, does that make it Dunkin' Donuts?) If you can imagine what it must be like to be trapped in a spinning top at 200 RPM, you get the idea. Where are the air-sickness bags for this ride? H-E-L-L-L-P!
