BOV rant
Blow-off Valves!
First off my intentions are not to insult people who have BOV's installed (i wouldnt be very popular if i did)but my reasons for *****ing here is to see how you guys feel about this insanely popular modification........- I have one big thing thats been bothering me about car tuners. BOV's for some reason, everything about them makes me wanna sit through an air supply concert instead of hearing one. First off i have never seen proof where a bov (especially on a wrx) has gotten any gains in power over the bypass valve unless the boost is cranked very high. Second i thought subaru's were supposed to be low key sports cars (arguable with the STI's wing and hood scoops) and thats one thing i've always loved about them. But when you hear that annoying PSSSHHH sound from hunderds of feet away its just begging cops to come get you. How can vendors charge upwards of 200 even 300bucks for your turbine wheel to lose momentum and have to build back up after shifting. Am i just talking out of my *** here or does this seem worse than the fartcan fad? (at least you can pick one up at walmart for $30) I actually wanna hear what u guys think about this so please let me know.

I swapped the 3" exhaust for a stock WRX turbo back (including cats) replaced the BOV and reset the ECM. Guess what ~ it now runs like a scared cat and me and the OBS are a spec in the rearview mirror!!!
Ptshhhhhh? No thanks.

It's my understanding that if isn't recirculative(if that's a word) it enhances performance about as much as underbody neon. It's like that VW commercial.........no megaphone required.

BOV's don't gain power, never have...never will.
The intended purpose is to allow the turbo to spool faster once the pressure has been relieved and to prevent reverse rotation of the turbine impeller blades. Also known as compressor surge.

It feels good to know im not going insane. I might be wrong but i thought that when you let off the throttle to shift the BOV would release the air into the inlet. The bypass valve keeps that turbine wheel spinning at a high rate to keep the boost going. Unless your running really high boost like 20lbs then you might want to prevent blowing something but otherwise its not worth it.

Bov are fun!!! That's about it. I don't have one installed, but I do have one I lend out fomr time to time. BOV/BPV prevent compressor surge. A surge in the compressor is caused by compressed air having no where else to go. Scenario: You let off the gas from WOT, a nano second ago your turbo was pumping about 320cfm @ 14psi into your motor. Where is the air going to go? Path of least resistance of course. Which is back through the turbo. TThere are two problems here, first and foremost, your turbo is still spinning due to the driving force of the exhaust gas. Air is still traveling in the natural direction, the designed direction of the compressor wheel. Something has to give. Hence the surge. In the gas turbine world we define a surge as an interuption of air flow across a stator or blade. They are only designed to flow air one way. Think of a wing.
The recirc or BOV give the air somewhere to go besides back through the compressor. The negative impact on our car results from the algorithim use to calculate the A/F. The MAF reads the air, the BOV kicks it out to atmosphere, the ECU thinks that air is still there, so you run rich. The recirc does not remove air that has already been calculated for. Make sense?

By the way this is off the subject but theres a talon tsi (second gen) in town with a fart can, cheap 18" wheels, and a BOV! lol, i heard the car is beat up but i dont know for sure. You guys think if the car is in good shape my wrx can take him....my wrx = stock except borla hush.
