what is different about the diff.? is it a 1-way, 1.5-way or a 2-way, or is it something else?

If you take the USDM STi VS the USDM Evo MR (The only '05 EVO) then the STi has much more advanced computing and better LSD's. Read the latest sports compact car if you don't believe me. The USDM Evo has no yaw control, only the JDM evo does. The biggest difference in the '05 Sti is the least reported on. For years the impreza has had brake slip where the rotors would vibrate and knock the pads away from the rotor. This means that when you hit the brakes the first time you do not get a the full stopping power. The '05 STi fixed this problem and in doing that had to use larger hubs and a different bolt pattern. There is a night and day difference between the '05 STi and all Sti's over the last 10 years. The Evolution is a nice car, but with some better suspension tunning the STi will destory it every time. Plus the Evolution costs at least $8k more.

I thought the Evo MR costs around what a STi costs.

No the MSRP for the STi is something around 33k, while the Evo is 35k+, but I have yet to see one go for that price they are all going for more than 38k.
