If you floor a WRX in fifth on the highway next to a floored, normally aspirated Audi V6 (which probably had an automatic), the Audi's going to do pretty well against the WRX.

I am pretty sure the A4 was stick becuase it jolted a couple times before he sped up (him shifting). Under the 2.8 moniker it said something but it was dark and I couldn't really read it, I assumed it said quattro, does that mean its AWD? If it was AWD, how in the world did it go that fast with only 190 hp? I'm beginning to think he had some mods or else my friend sucks at all wheel drive driving.

Did your friend downshift?

FWIW, I'm with SuperDave17 on the myth of German egineering. Audi's and BMW's are very nice cars, but I would not own another one again. I've had too much bad personal experience.

Yeah, he did downshift. We were already in fourth because we were coming off an on-ramp just getting on the highway. I'm pretty sure he put it in third. I'm thinking of two variables though. I think he just tried to shift really quickly and let the clutch out way too quickly and just stomped the gas, which was the first mistake. Secondly, he waited way too long to shift. He was well into the redline in each shift, so boost had significantly dropped off. I really like audis though too. My friend has one, my brother in law has two (and a subie) and his parents have two VW's, all of which are nice cars. All of the Audis have made frequent visits to the garage, and one of the older ones doesn't even start in the rain, LOL. The VW's (only about two years old) already have little bits ripping and tearing off on the inside. Oh well, still nice, but I wouldn't buy one.

Oh yeah, I've been meaning to ask this as well. If the 2.8 Audi engine is this quick, how fast is the Jetta vr6? It has the same size engine, but puts out about 165 horsepower. I'm talking of a third gen, not the new ones.

If you add the $6k EIP Tuning turbo kit on them they can be quick. My buddy had one on his Jetta VR6. At 6psi he was running 14.2's. N/A wise I know the new ones are not that quick cause I ran two GTi's.

RAAZ227,

Are all GTIs vr6s? I really like the look of them tho, however fast they are.

Thats an expensive kit, btw. My friend said theres a supercharger for 2.0 jettas that will make them able to beat a rex, but when I looked it up it said they would have only 160 hp when all was said and done. Whats the deal?

If you turbo'd a cavalier or some other k car would it be able to beat a rex?

VW makes 3 GTIs with 3 different engines

There is the base 1.8L Turbo 4 model, which puts out 180 hp.
The typical VR6 model has a 2.8L VR6 that puts down 200
The R32 has a 3.2L VR6 that puts down 237 (which is 10 higher than another number that we should all be familiar with)

Those r32s are pretty hot, heavy though, I think they weigh close to 3300 lbs. It's weird that their 0-60 time is only 6 seconds and they're governed at 128 miles per hour. Blah. Are you sure the vr6 engine puts out 200? I think it's more like 174.

I find it very hard to believe a supercharged 2.0l will beat a WRX. The neuspeed kit is pretty weak. A stock 2.0l makes a 115hp. They are very, very slow. I know b/c my girl has one. The VR6 GTI IMO is a waist. There are heavy but torquey. They are 200hp. I have encountered them before and I know a "stock" REX can beat them. I have a lot of buddies with turbo VR6's and they all prefer the older VR6 motor due to it's better head & valve design.

The only car in VW's line up that you have to be somewhat concerned about is the 1.8t (except R32) with mods. There is plenty of stuff out there to make them qucik, but again they are FWD. My bro-inlaw has a stock GTi 1.8t. I like to call them torque monsters cause all they do is spin the front tires. Once you get them to hook the turbo (in stock from) has reached it's limits. It seems once you get it about 5500 rpm they just fall flat and feel like a n/a car. Whereas the WRX's powerband is vicious up top (3500-6800rpm). Now the R32 from my research is about as fast as a stock WRX. IMO I think they are a waist. Why not slap a turbo on that motor and then you've go a STi/EVO competitor.

Because one does not just "slap a turbo" on a normally aspirated high output engine, for starters! lol
