Hey guys,
Glad I found a thread for us GVRD and YVR people. I don't own a Subaru, but I'm hanging out on the threads to get information and help.
I'm looking into a used Subaru... but I'm worried that I'll run into a ton of problems and have to pay too much money to get it fixed and what not. Was thinking of getting new, but that's way outta my range.
Thinking a GC8 maybe?

Hey Dug,
welcome to the club. In case you're unfamiliar our Vancouver Impreza Club also posts on nasioc.com. Anywho. If you're looking for an Impreza I'll certainly recommend one that is 00' and up since 98 and 99 2.5 engines have been known to have problems with headgaskets and oil leaks. Also, if you get yourself an 00+ Impreza you are able to bring your car in to have the common "clutch shudder" problem fixed under warrenty. As I'm sure you realize, the clutch shudder problem isn't anything major but is quite the irritation when it occurs when your clutch is cold.
If you are thinking of something cheaper like a 98-01 TS I believe that the 2.2L engine is problem free. I've heard RUMOURS too that automatic 98-99 2.5 engines tend to be less common with problems.
If anyone else is more familiar with the price range of cars please correct me; however, I believe you can find 98 RS as low as $14.5K (but beware of history) and TS of the same year to be around $1500 less at the lowest. There are also Impreza L, Outback Sports, and etc.
Good Luck on your search!

Would it seem a reasonable idea to get a 1998ish Subaru Impreza TS or L (since they're cheaper) and modify from there?
I'm thinking that 2.5RS owners will probably rev a lot or drive fast, while people with lower end Imprezas will not redline.

not sure how it's looking in terms of getting a standard transmission for a TS or an L. All i've seen are automatics.
There are a few ppl who have bought TS and have made em look pretty sweet - like the newer 4 door RS.
Benson (Imprezaboi) is one of these fellas. I believe he's pretty much decked out his car to a complete Ver5/6 look.
Concerning the Impreza L. There aren't many of em for sale out there and if I bought one I don't think I'd be very happy with it after going to a local meet and seeing all the RS and WRX. The L aren't too pretty exterior-wise (they've got different colors than the TS and RS), interior-wise, and under the hood. It'll take a lot of work to get them to be half decent.
Give a couple of the TS guys a shout and have a look at what they've done. It's pretty impressive

Dude, go bite the bullet and get yourself a good condition GC8.
The mods are pretty endless, whether u end up with a RS or TS/L, they're still good buy. TS/L require a bit of work from u if your intention is to make it an RS (hood, put in rear discs, cosmetics, power and handling). There are somewhat limited things u can do, but don't let that discourage you.
You will be making a good investment if that's the car u've always wanted. Sometimes Vancouverites have smaller meets, maybe u should come out to one of those, like the one we had last winter in Burnaby Lake park since non-Subie owners wanted to check out our cars. We're nice ppl, come on out! We don't bite especially when we can match a face with a name.

Finding a good condition (and reasonable priced) GC8 would be difficult to find, I think.
Most I've seen on the buy and sell average way way over 20,000 km a year for mileage. almost like 30,000 or so.

Just gotta keep a constant look out on the boards as well as buy and sell. If I recall you have been searching for one since last winter when we put up that Burnaby Lake meet.
Off the top of my head I can think of a couple of ppl that has been saying they'll get rid of their's soon, and there have been a few that's been posted on NASIOC, one of which was at a dealer (the owner was on the board but he had to move back to HK). Just gotta keep a constant lookout for it.
The reasonable price part u might have to be a bit flexible on. The GC/GM bodies are very sought after these days. The high mileage could be highway miles.. which IMHO won't be as bad as one that's always used in the city.

The GC8 is just one awesome car, due to recent conditions, ie beam deal gone sour, my car is not done. Who cares about that, you're up to bat right now. The gc is just a awesome investment, as Mirage pointed out earlier, browsing the forsale forums keep a close eye on the vancouver forums is a sure fire way to get what you need. I've sourced every part from my car to this date by being a good vulture.
If you get a fellow members car, I can almost gaurantee that its going to be in just awesome condition. So search around and see what you get, haggle (its fun)

haggle with people on the board?
hmm...
well, my one concern (As it is with any used car) is getting a car that has been redlined a good amount of times, or just driven really really hard (which is bound to happen with any car enthusiast... *points to self*).
Hence my reason for getting the "family" version of the Impreza...since most moms and dads don't corner at high speeds and drift

I really think u should jump on getting an RS. I purchased one just over a month ago, and I'm definitely satisfied. And it's not completely true that owners of sports cars always push their cars to the limit. I myself baby my car.... well, most of the time
Well, I can see why nobody would want my car and that's why I'm keeping it (not that I'm selling mine you). Seems to be a few RSs popping here and there for sale nowadays...

Is Total the only place that specializes in Subarus?
If I'm gonna go for a used Impreza, was interested in looking for a place that would be able to do a full checkup on the car (people who have tried BCAA tell me that they don't do that great a job?)...

A lot of people seem to be selling their RS. Are there any particular reasons? Could it be the WRX and the STi?
