I've fired many, MANY pistols in my day, and my fav by far happens to be a Glock model 21, which is a full sized .45. People sometimes avoid .45s because they are afraid of recoil, however, since the frame of the gun is large (for a glock) and the round is big and slow (low velocity), the recoil is very low compared to a .40, .357sig, and 9mm even because it doesn't "snap" like high velocity rounds do.
I'm more accurate with my Glock 21 then my friends are with purpose built target guns. Its one of the most reliable pistols on earth too. I used to not like Glocks when I was younger because everyone likes them and I wanted to be different, but I learned my lesson... Glocks are just amazing pieces of work.
You can get a Glock 21 for around $550-600. If you're looking for something a tiny bit smaller with cheaper ammo, there's always the Glock model 17. I have both and I prefer the 21. Actually, I think I'm up to 6 glocks now.
Another pistol you should really look into is the Springfield XD series. Cheaper the a glock, just as accurate, very reliable, more safety features and just an all around great gun. You can get different sizes and different calibers. I'd get the 9mm or the .45... Not a big fan of .40. You can get one out the door with some extra XD gear for around $500.

As you can see, the XD has a grip safety, loaded chamber indicator, cocking indicator, and is prettier then the glock. I prefer the glock because its simple and doesn't have anything you don't need, which is one of the reasons it fires in even the most extreme conditions (buried under sand, water, frozen, dropped out of a plane, and yes, Im not kidding). Its the AK-47 of the pistol world.

Check out this video to see how reliable it really is.
