Your favorite Norcal long drives (3+ hours one way)

Planning a guys outing. Need suggests for "long drives" where one way is 3+ hours or more with great scenery, fun roads, and interesting destinations.

Final destination would be great if there was a hiking trail there. Or something fun for a bunch of guys to do.

Yosemite

Clear Creek/ New Idria

lol, true.

though I cant think of a better alternative than up through Sonoma/napa/humboldt. Ive met more than a few groups that have come from all other parts of the US and even europe to drive our northbay roads, and we have them all to ourselves at anytime. What more can you ask for

Heres one spot up north Ive been dying to check out...

Oh, so you're going to keep the Hopland grade a secret? How about the Old Toll Road turnoff and rally adventure it into Highland Springs? I know you don't want to mention the name of a certain tuning company who has a mountain named after it...which has Bottle Rock Rd., Red Rock Rd., and several other, smaller roads which shall remain nameless.

Of course...back behind Nice and Lucerne is the bestest of the dirt/gravel roads for high speed playground fun in the Subies. Don't forget about Cow Mountain recreation area...that might get some people excited (bushido)...

OH-MY-GAWDS you must tell me where this stuff is. I have yet to find safe dirt areas to run on.

chimmchimm, here's what you do;

Go to your local bookstore/outdoors store and buy the Benchmark Atlas for California.

or order it from Amazon;
http://www.amazon.com/Benchmark-Cali...5624435&sr=8-1

Any road that is shown as a dashed line is unpaved.

How "safe" it is is entirely up to you, on most open public roads you can expect to meet an oncoming F-250 at any time, so use some judgment....

Cow Mountain OHV rec area is between Ukiah and Lakeport...a huge range...

...I remember some really fun times up there...but I won't discuss those, because my wife reads these boards.
