XP Pro vs. Home?

Hey,

What are the big differences between XP Pro and XP Home. I have XP home on my laptop and my buddy just put XP Pro on my laptop. So far, the only think i've noticed is that XP Home has that damn one click. I like double clicking things. I don't even know how to change names or folders with XP Home. Perhaps there is a way to get rid of that damn one clicking.

anyways, both XP Pro and Home should be compatible with each other right? Like in a network. All the software out there that require XP don't specify which version.

anyone care to shed some light?
thanks a lot.

I believe 'Pro' just gives you additional capabilities with networking and user logins/maintenance. It's not as dumbed down as XP Home.

And you can turn off that single click ****, I think you have to disable "view desktop as a web page" or something and it will work. I haven't done it in a while

Pro adds domain membership support and remote desktop support, mostly.

Heres the comparison:

there we go - I thought the domain membership support was the main key but I wasn't positive so I left it out

Only because home users put all kinds of crap on their machines

Another big different is that Pro supports dual processors.

Dual processor and remote desktop are the main things I use in xp pro that I might miss in xp home

It operates better, is probably more engery efficent. It's simplier, runs different processes thatn home. The networking is way more straight forward in Pro.

Pro>Home

I've seen Vista. It's looks VERY promising. We'll see how it holds up.

Alright. I'll switch over to XP pro next week. I'll be able to keep all the programs that good ol SONY pre-installed right?

Thanks guys.

Computer idiots really get shafted. The other day when I was picking up my laptop at BestBuy... this one woman was charged 50 bucks for having the "Geed Squad" reinstall windows. Installing software is like 30 bucks. tsk tsk tsk.

Pro is for network users. It gives you domain control capabilities.

As far as I'm aware: Home lets you remote desktop as well. I've done it at home.

You don't really need Pro, but it is easier to use for more advanced users. Home Edition is for people who have a single machine at home and don't do any home networking - they just surf the net or play games.

Home can be a client- that is it can remotely access a pro machine, but it can't be a server, so you can't get into your "home" machine from work.

And actually home is fine for home networking as long as you only need simple print spooling and internet stuff.

psoper: now that I think about it, you're right. I only remote into my pro machine from my home edition, lol.

Home edition is fine, you don't need pro unless you're hardcore.

look for the upgrade for XP PRO. might be cheaper than the full version.

reinstalling windows is a rather boring but LOOOONG job. i can see the $50 since you'll be sitting there watching grass grow. plus they probably have to reinstall all the drivers and crap.

I forgot to mention, you can always turn off one click on home. I've done it many times while fixing someone elses PC. You can also turn off "viewing your desktop as a web page" etc.

As far as the price of XP Pro Upgrade (from 98+) vs XP Pro Full, no difference in price. If you need to buy a copy of XP Pro, get it OEM. Using upgrade versions are a pain in the butt if you ever have to reformat.
