XBOX 360 for DVDs

Hey guys,

DVD player is rejecting just about all my DVDs so i think it's time to replace it. Instead of just getting another DVD player, i was thinking about getting an XBOX 360 (esp. since they've been on sale this season). It's also a cheap way to get HD-DVD with their 200 dollar attachment. Anyhoo, can the 360 function like a genuine stand alone DVD player? Are there a bunch of annoying XBOX menus and controls? My PS2 was really annoying... I hated using the game-pad and I also hated having to punch in the 18+ passwords. If the Wii couple play DVDs, which I'm upset it can't, I'd get that instead. Thanks a lot guys.

I've been pretty happy with my 360 as a dvd player... wireless controller works well, and the media remote even better. It's just like a regular player.

you will have the 360 menuing system.

the ps2 menu has less stuff to go through.

get the HD DVD player too. it comes with a free version of KING DONG HD DVD. i ended up getting the APPOLLO 13 HD DVD since i already have the regular DVD version of it and i want to A/B test them both...

in the long run, $400 is a lot for a regular DVD system. i hated the NBA 07 that came with the system. looks good though.

but for a $600 HD DVD player... it cant be beat. plus you get a killer game system... lol...

Who needs DVDs when you have the Wii?

personally. i wouldn't use my 360 as a dvd player. I wouldnt'want to apply extra "stress" to the moving parts within the system. I would just get a > $100 dvd system or upgrade to the HDDVD player, which i did. Surprisingly it looks amazing.

The 360 seems to work pretty well as a DVD player. It's better than the Xbox was (the 360 has no problem with burnt DVDs) which was already way better than the PS2 set-up.

If i end up getting a DVD to last me until the HD-DVD players get cheaper, it'll def be the Oppo.

I'm a little concerned with this idea of "stress" being put on the XBOX as a DVD player? The XBOX is supposed to read DVDs... Does it prefer games over movies or something?

Good thing the prices on the 360 are at an all time low!

thanks for the help guys.

i think the comment was, dont use the xbox as a dvd player. you will WEAR DOWN the mechanical stuff.

IOW, which will you rather wear down? a $40 regular DVD player or a $299 (or $399) xbox to play back your regular DVS?

Totally true. Though my 360 plays DVDs better than any other game system I've owned, I still use a dedicated cheapo (maybe $100) DVD player to keep the unecessary wear and tear off of the 360. Same goes for my computer where I purchased a dedicated external DVD burner for my iMac. I use this drive for all of the big stuff like backing up my DVD movie collection as it would be easier/cheaper to replace due to wear than my Mac's internal drive.

I see... Thanks.

I can't decide between the OPDV971H and the 970HD. Which would you choose? I have no problem paying the extra 50 dollars if it's worth it. Only concern is that the 971H requires "careful calibration" to hook up to a DLP...

if they are local, ask what their return policy is.

sometimes, reading stuff at websites can only go far.

for example, i was eyeing this hiking boots. it looked so good on their website. but when i actually ordered it and opened the box, i was like "WTF is this crap?"

as for the careful calibration, might be that what you need is a ISF certified tuner.

or you can buy something like VIDEO ESSENTIALS and tune the plasma yourself...
