It's fine to have your own account for a few of your own fun toys, but don't let it totally negate the whole foundation of dealing with money. That's part of trusting someone.... and yea there are a lot of fails I've heard of between families and someone spending too much or using the money for the mortgage, etc.
Be responsible and proactive, I think just avoiding the situation isn't the concern of mine. The concern of that is there is deeper problem which is why you won't have a joint account in the first place. Problem solve the situation, don't negate it.

If my husband brought a BRZ/FR-S home (assuming we'd be in a situation that could actually support a new car purchase) I'd be thrilled. We already have two Foresters - I'd love to have an impractical sports car for once.
