windshield crack

Hi, I have a new crack in my windshield. It's about a quarter inch to half-inch in diameter. I got it while driving on 880S. There were a whole convoy of 18-wheelers in the right lane, and I was two lanes over to the left, and I still got smacked by a rock.

Is there anything I can do to slow down the growth of the crack? Thanks in advance.

you can get it repaired and it shouldn't spread anymore unless the weather is hot, at which point you may have to get it replaced.

call your insurance... many insurance policies have a "windshield/glass" section. Mine for example, says that they will repair any windshield cracks/bullseyes for free. If they can not repair it, I have to pay a $100 deductable of replacing the windshield. Most chips/cracks, when caught before they are too big, can be repaired thus preventing further cracking. The longer you wait, the more it can crack and thus make a repairable windshield non-repairable--thus call now! If you have this coverage, your insurance company should recommend for you some glass repair places.

My insurance doesn't pay for crack repair, only for replacing the entire windshield. In that case, I would have to pay the whole $500 deductible. They could not recommend a glass-repair shop.

When my windshield broke my insurance company referred me to Diamond Autoglass in San Jose or Santa Clara. They did a decent job. They'll go to your work place to do the repair, which is pretty nice.

Thanks. That is in fact the place that I called. They came out to my house and repaired the crack. They did not need to replace the entire windshield. You can barely tell it was cracked. It's impressive.

Heh, i called "elmer ramirez" earlier today and set up a appointment for tommorow.
Elmer's on vacation so I talked to some girl instead.

Here's what they told me over the phone:
$180 for thier glass with weather stripping.

$240 for oem glass with weather stripping (have to wait a few days for them to get the oem glass).

I went with the $180 deal.

I have used the 'do-it-yourself' kits from autoparts stores in the past. They have worked in most cases. They are far more effective on small bullseye chips with small cracks of 1/2" or so, but it may be worth a try.

Called and the woman that answered quoted me $572+$60 labor+materials for OEM glass, then $750 for the Pilkington glass installed.

I asked her for the "i-club price" and that is what she gave me.

Any other options?

I got another crack in my windshield a few days after the first one. I called Premier again last night, but they were booked so they referred me to A Clear View mobile service. If you're interested, their numbers are 408-813-1888 and 408-509-2288. The price was the same as Premier's.

Linda did a great job taking care of the crack this morning. Good luck.
