Why do people "Gauge interest" on regular stuff?

We went through the discussion about calling dibs, and then 90 percent of people who call dibs back out - why the heck did you call dibs if you weren't genuinely interested?

Gauging interest is like apraising. You want to know how much something rare or exceptionally cool is worth.

If you had an all original ZL1 Camaro or a '50 Olds or 240z w/ an SR20DET and full sheetmetal/custom interior w/ awesome custom paint you built from scratch and it's one of a kind expert craftsmanship, you gauge interest on that because you have no idea what it's worth.

But why the heck do people gauge interest on catbacks, commonly attainable suspension, and like cans of spam? These things come on sale once a week/day, and we clearly know their worth, and you are either selling it or you aren't. If you are "gauging interest" to see if someone will offer you an above average price, they won't, because the exact same item will come on sale in another week.

Gauging interest on modified cars - Yo, the WRX is no vintage collector's car. These things are mass produced and you exactly know how much they sell for. With all things, especially big ticket items, if you sell below what it's worth you hope for a quick sale and if you sell at what its worth cars generally take a few months to sell. If you gauge interest on your pimped out car b/c you hope to get money to buy an EVO or something, nobody will offer you a good price b/c well maintained and cheap cars come on sale all the time from people who are looking to offload their car/parts because they are in financial trouble or simply want something else. Simple as that.

"Testing waters" - people dip their feet in the pool because they are too ***** to jump in, sellers test waters because they don't really want to sell - again they are trying to see if a buyer will offer them a super favorable deal on a swaybar which they won't because again these parts, in good quality, come on here all the time.

Whatever y'all call dibs, gauge interest, and test waters for all I care. Hopefully if you ever start your own business or when you get a job with a lot of responsibility you will realize: you just can't do this kind of kind of stuff in the real world.

Now of course there are people in the world who take advantage of market discrepancies and sell things for above their worth - this is called arbitrage. However the people who do this arbitrage are transnational banks and investment firms, not us people doing day to day transactions. Regular people do in fact attempt a form of Arbitrage - it's called day trading and people usually fail.

who cares?

Are you just mad because someone who was gauging interest didn't end up selling the item you were interested in?

Face it...this is i-club...far from the real world.

I think people gauge interest to see if there is anyone willing to buy product at a fair market value, not an inflated one. Let's say that you are selling a catback, or a turbo, or any part off a car. Now, at the time, there may or may not be someone seriously interested in purchasing it. But you will get several low-ball offers, from people trying to get something for next to nothing. By gauging interest, you can see if you can really get an offer for what the product is worth, not just a bunch of low-ball BS offers.

It sounds like you got burned on a "Gauging Interest" thread, and well, I hope it goes better for you next time. If someone were in a desperate financial situation, they would sell to a low-baller cause they need the money. It looks to me that a thread that is gauging interest is a seller trying to get a fair price for an item, but is not in a hurry to dump it.

No, I did not have a personal experience. That is why I comparing it to dibs, more than mad (because I'm not really mad) it's just something that I don't understand why people do.

You're right, wise one. I don't care. I-club is far from the real world

Once in a while I get that impulse that the stuff is messed up in the world and call it out. But like you point out 20 minutes later, then I stop caring.

To be fair to people, sometimes people gauge interest because they don't know how much it's worth and want to know what a fair price is. But then they should just ask people straight up. And like I mentioned, with items like catbacks and suspension we pretty much know what it's worth already.

I never get burned on a gauging interest thread because people who post 'gauging interest' threads are usually looking for above market price. I don't lowball people, I try my best to find what an item's worth and offer a fair price - this is how sales are best done IMHO.
