who offers CHEAP service? tore my CV boot

OK, to be honest, I think I tore my own CV boot in my front driver's side axle.

Can't replace the little plastic $1 boot. Gotta replace the whole front axle.

Where can I find a cheap, used one? Will a junkyard have one?

Secondly, will places like LIC or anywhere else lcoal to the bay install it for cheap?

Dealership warranty won't cover it, and it costs $675 to fix.

Dude, I tore my CV boot on the front axle a while ago and my independant certified subaru mechanic (Steve Barsotti in Newcastle, CA) fixed it for pretty cheap and the cost of labor, under an hour I think. As far as I know, there is NO reason you should have to replace your entire axle. Maybe you can give him a call and ask him?

BTW: Screw the dealership.

Just curious - how did you know the CV boot was damaged? What sound does it make when broken?

doesnt make a sound. when i took my wheel off, there was crazy grease everywhere, and after some intense investigation, i found it was leaking from the boot.

Ok, since a few people have asked, I'll post up my recommendation.

Steve Barsotti is a great Subaru certified mechanic who has his own independant shop where he specializes in subarus.

Barsotti's Auto Care
400 Main St # D
Newcastle, CA 95658-9358 Phone: (916) 663-3077

I had my car there a few months ago where he partially rebuilt my engine, and fixed a few other things including a torn axle boot. I don't remember exactly how much the boot cost to fix since it was added onto the total cost of the work, but I remember it was pretty insignificant and the only thing that needed to be replaced was the rubber boot itself and the little metal clamp that holds it on (they come together when buying the replacement part).

I'd encourage anyone to give him a call. He does all the stuff that a dealership does, plus he has experience with engine swaps, rebuilding transmissions, and he does work for lots of other big name shops. He easily saved me a few thousand with my engine work! Search around and you should be able to find other people's recommendations for him. Very nice guy.

Had my front CVs fixed on my Maxima when I had the tranny rebuilt, believe it cost under $200 for each. This was at a small shop in Tracy, not a dealership though.
