So far, all the major car rental places here in the bay rent automatics.
Budget, Avis, Enterprise. Called them up and said they only rent automatics.

Anyone have a leads where I can go rent a stick shift?

good link! have you used them before? my sister wants to learn to drive manual, but i wasn't gonna let her use my car for that purpose.

 

I just called budget up, they said they dont rent out
manual transmissions cars =( (At least thats what the rep told me)

If you just trying to learn stick, or teach someone, try u-haul. Sound crazy, but they usually have trucks for rent that are stick shift, the is a u-haul near just about everyone, and it's cheap. I think they are about $20 a day plus $0.79 a mile.

or if you're trying to learn how to drive stickshift, just look in your local yellow pages under driving schools. There are some that offer stickshift lessons. Only pay for how many lessons you want, no commitments, no contracts (at least the one I went to).

 

National Rental Cars in Concord by the private airport rents S2000's. My friend rented one from them before, but its kinda expensive.

 

actually, if you want to learn to drive stick, go to your local dealer, tell them you want to buy a civic or something, then say how you want a stick in order to "save gas" and all that BS. They should offer to teach you.

Well, not should, they do. I know a few people who learned to drive stick this way.

 

ive been trying to find somoene to teach me stick, its hard, but yeah, the uhaul thing sounds nice, do u have to go pick up their trucks? what if they see u and go like..umm...i think we'll rent you an auto instead, lol. or..the going to a car dealer thing sounds like a good idea, but if ur not ognna buy the car, they'll hate you, lol. and the driving lessons are sooooooo expensive man, but..hey if u wanna learn that badly..do it! cuz u get..actual training instead of learning on ur own which might be a bit tougher. good luck with ur search though!

 

I've rented and driven stick-shift u-haul trucks (BIG ones) for the purpose of moving, not learning to drive manual. The clutch and transmission on these trucks can take a lot of abuse, which is good, but you do not want to drive them out yourself without any prior experience. If you are not used to driving longer-than-usual car/truck before in crowded streets, the last thing you want to worry about is shifting or working the clutch.

Plus they might look at you funny if you couldn't get the truck out of the lot in 5 tries...

my mom rented from specialty rental. i needed a nice car for prom.
nice people. only problem was that it's a pain in the *** to deal with all that junk. paperwork.. ewww.

 

Hahaha... true. My brother used this method to learn, and back when he did it ( about 8 years ago) they offered the smaller open bed chevy and toyotas in stick. Those are the same size as any personal truck. As far as getting it off the lot, my dad went and picked it up for him. If the only truck that is stick these days is a streched one, I wouldn't reccomend u-haul either.
