You dont need a whole diff. You just need 3.9 ring and pinion.

If you do want the whole thing, then you need 90-94 Legacy Turbo 5-spd rear end.

so to make the jdm 6speed work in my 2002 wrx, what excactly do i need? i was told to get an auto driveshaft from a 1997-1999 auto impreza and to get the rear diff out of the older legacy. is that correct? are there any other ways to make it work? thanks

You can use any 99+ auto driveshafts if I am not mistaken. For the diff if your not going to R180 then you can order up a 3.90 ring and pinon new from Subaru (get the right one as they make more than a couple of different ones). If your looking for a complete diff then as Alex stated you need the 90-94 Legacy Turbo unit.

For referencing different used diffs use this link http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/lsd/lsd.html
