Hey guys, I was wondering what type of gloves, if any, you use when working on your car? The reason why I ask is because I work on my car all the time and I use to never ever wear gloves because #1, i'm manly (jk ) #2, didn't really see the need...

untillll I accidentally clipped my pinky with pliers, twice when changing my brake pads. It made a small bubble filled with blood and it wasn't pleasant. Also, cleaning my hands are a pain, even with Gojo, not all of that dirt and grime comes off. I've hurt my hands a good amount of times slipping off a wrench or whatever.

Also, I was at LIC for my 30k service ( didn't have time to do it myself), and I notice they all used rubber/latex type gloves instead of mechanics gloves. Before, I was set getting a pair of mechanics gloves, looked like it'll give some protection and I can wash them (separate from my regular clothes). So, will latex gloves be adequate? Man I so want to steal a box from the school's chem lab but not gonna risk getting kicked outta school for something that stupid.

Now that I think about it a little, having both would be a good idea...latex for when you work on fluids, mechanics for everything else?

 

Latex gloves are only like $5 for a box of 50 at Walgreens. Probably even cheaper at Walmart. Why bother stealing them? They won't protect you much though, mainly just keep your hands clean.

 

i use latex when doing fluid stuff... esp if its gear oil, one of the worst smelling things in the world.

 

Nice, I'll just get both. Oh, well it just seems so easy. I remember seeing a lot of people just going to the dispensary and asking for a box..then they put em in their backpacks. Just kidding about the stealing part of course.

Even pro mechanics use disposable Latex/Nitrile gloves. I use Latex most of the time, and Nitrile when working with gas/oil/petroleum (since the latex would dissolve).

In the beginning I was all manly (and stupid) and didn't use anything, but the nasty black smelly gunk that stayed for days was not a hit with the ladies.

 

latex when oil and stuff are involved. and i need to feel the parts.

mechanix when i need more protection. like around exhaust parts.

Latex for oil change,etc. Mechanix for other stuff.

 

Ford Friction Modifier mixed with gear oil. I want to vomit just thinking about it.

I prefer Nitrile as I find it doesn't tear as easy. You can get gloves really cheap at Costco. They used to be 4 boxes for $10 or something. I think it's 3 for $15 now, but still a good deal.

As much as I prefer to wear gloves I usually forget to put them on until it's too late. Also not a fan of the Mechanix type gloves unless I'm working on something large (swapping wheels type work). Otherwise I find them to be more an annoyance than a help.

Yeah I realized a lot of people might use both, but I got the information I needed. I'm just going to get both, they are relatively cheap. It's a good investment. Thanks everyone!

 

The real question: does your doctor use latex gloves? or mechanics' gloves? or none at all?

 

and don't forget eye protection when you are under the car. I use both types of gloves depending on what I'm doing.
