My friend works at Americas tire co... one day some guy came in and was like "I want some chrome rims"... so he brings out black wheels with a chrome rim... ha ha.
Needless to say, its WHEEL. Even the pros call it a wheel. Rim is just jive talk.

To me, wheel means tire and rim the whole assembly. If you are calling the rims wheels, then how do you address the whole package?
"That car over there has tires that are too wide for his wheels", sounds awkward to me....
"He curbed his rims" no confusion, "He curbed his wheels", I don't know if he damaged the tire, rim, both or even his whole car.
