What's the scariest thing that's ever happened to you?

Joking aside, what is the most terrifying thing you've ever experienced. I have 3.

1. 1988 my parents took us to the Ramstein airshow, also known as the Ramstein air disaster that killed more than a dozen people when an aircraft crashed into the crowd of people... We were about 50 yards from where the incident happened. It was the scariest f'ing thing I've ever encountered. First time I've ever seen a dead body... I had nightmares for months because of it... And now I have a really severe fear of flying.

2. I went for a bike ride one night on my high end specialized bike which was worth around $3,500 + he HID system and all the extras I had. A group of guys try to jack me for my bike (Vatos), I panicked and lucky for me I had a giant think of 15% concentrated pepper spray that I took out of my fanny pack (yeah, FANNY PACK!!!). I sprayed them all and booked the HELL out of there. There was about 7 of them and 1 of me... They pushed me off my bike and tried to steal it but they got sprayed instead. :) I know it had a good outcome but it was scary as hell especially since it was like 1am. I had just bought the bike a few days earlier and there's no way I was gonna let someone take it. I sprayed the HELL out of them. (there's more to it than that but for legal reasons I dont want to share that part, lol. If you're a friend of mine and want to know, please PM me and I'll tell you.

3. On a flight home from Germany when we were about to land @ SFO we hit a bunch of turbulence and the pilot told us to brace for impact. My life flashed before my eyes and I thought for sure I was dead... Luckily we landed, and once we did everyone shook the hand of the pilot. That was scary as HELL.

4. The last time is when I got stuck in a very tight space in some cave... That part of the cave was called "Godzilla's Nostril". It was vertical and very tight. I was stuck for a while and started panicking. Im so closterphobic now thanks to that.... Ug.

What about you? Whats the scariest moment(s) in your life?

I know I have more but thats the only one I can think about.

PS: I forgot the time my friend and I went off a cliff on Hamilton in his caged 510. That was CRAZY scary.

newyorkreload 01-27-2011 12:38 PM

Holy crap dude, I know all about the Ramstein air show.

1) In high school, Was pumping gas as two guys with shotguns pulled up ran in and robber the place.

2) Loss traction during snow storm as I was on the freeway, spun 3 times and missed oncoming traffic by about 3 feet.

3) In high school, came home to a house that was ransacked. neighbor said he saw three guys, though they were friends of my sisters. They took all my dads guns and kicked over our TV.

4) Once again in high school, was at my GF place when swat pulled up and raided her next door neighbors house. We thought they were coming after us when they first pulled up cause they blocked both houses.

For those wondering, in high school i lived about 3 blocks from where the Good Guys hostage shooting ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaksXPQgR80 ) took place. In south Sacramento.

Playing peewee football I tackled a guy far smaller than me. Had a helmet to helmet collision and for what felt like an eternity I couldn't feel my legs.

Was hit by a car surprisingly it wasn't that scary though now that I think about.

Me and a friend got chased by 4 guys with bats.

Probably the scariest was getting t-boned by a drunk driver in my subaru when it was 6 months old. If I was in my old car I would have been dead.

gunmtl 01-27-2011 01:38 PM

One of the scariest moments in my life was when my gf had to go in for surgery.
I was in the waiting room when the doctor came in and asked to see me outside.
The look on his face was not good.
My heart sank and I thought he was gonna tell me she died!

Thank fully that wasn't the case, but he did tell me they found a small cancerous growth that there were able to remove.

One night I came back from La Vics with a buddy, I shat literally all night and I woke up inside my room, and in the bathroom without knowing how I got there. The next day I checked and it turned out I lost 20lbs of waterweight, it must've been a stomach flu of some sort, needless to say, I'm not going to La Vics any time soon.

closest i ever got to having a really hairy situation in my truck going 4 wheeling was going up this face on a hill.

the face is all rock.

friend made it up just fine and i followed him. i wasnt as setup has him and as now today.

i started to slip sideways. and when going up a hill, going sideways is the worse thing you can do because that would cause the vehicle to roll down.

fortunately, i got the rear end to slip sideways in the opposite direction to help me line up correctly uphill.

but this also caused my right rear wheel to fall into a small dip. so now, i had others in the club run to my front bumper and hold it down. otherwise, i could tilt backwards and the vehicle would just roll backwards in a worse case.

fortunately, i already moved my winch from the rear bumper to the front bumper. i have a setup where the winch can be removed and slide into a tow hitch. i had someone grab his winch controller, plug it into my winch, run off come cable and attach it to a tree (or rock... i forget).

i slowly winched myself up the hill.

only proof of this is a 2 shot GIF another club member made. zoom in and you can see my truck go from a bad angle to a straight one:

Hit by a car in bumper to bumper traffic on 99sb.. As I did a little mid air flip I could see a rather large and rather old pickup truck in the lane I was tumbling into.. I think that was the fastest I have ever moved in my life to get back up and gtfo of that lane.. Luckily the truck was paying attention and was able to stop before running my ass over.. Ended up with only a couple busted ribs..

Another bike incident - can't recall the highway - just that I hit a deep rut covered by a slippy tar snake on a hot day while fully leaned over/ hanging off on a left sweeper.. Knee wasn't quite down - but it was a gentle curve and speeds were somewhere triple digit - and there was a nice deeeeep cliff a few feet right of the right shoulder w/o guard rail.. Bike started bucking back and fourth pretty hard.. Threw my outside leg off the rearset.. Then it got into a nice lock to lock tank slapper despite my damper (which was obviously set toooo soft) I was pretty sure I was done - the gap in the pavement followed the curve for a full few hundred feet and was the edge of a crappy patch.. So I was slotted into it pretty good.. Kept a level head and steady throttle (well as steady as i could given the thrashing) - but i was pretty sure I was done - then suddenly the pavement cleared up and I was good.

..

Actually.. come to think.. I probably have a few dozen stories like that.. Which is why I promised wifey I'd keep most of the speed at the track now that I'm a daddy....

iLoqin 01-27-2011 04:20 PM

Did some stupid stuff that I didn't think was too scary when I did it, but reflecting back on it I was a douche.

Spun out on the freeway in my first car, mr2 1st gen. Even that was scarier than getting mugged in SF when I was a teen.

back in 2003 i caught a guy poaching deer off the county road by cache creek(the river area not casino lol) he was about 125yrds away. i yelled at him and he shot at me,hitting me in the waste. lucky for me he was 1)shooting a .22 2) a bad shot 3)i was wearing a leatherman. the bullet hit the leatherman causing a super gnarly bruise. i returned fire with my .45 hitting his truck as he drove away.

ive had more than one scary incident at work and all were close calls.

most recently im currently going through some really really nasty crap that leaves me scared everyday i wake up.

kyle16 01-27-2011 07:06 PM

I would say the top 2 in recent memory are:

1. My dad calling me back in September because my mom was in bad shape and we ended up calling 911 to take her to the hospital. She wasn't responding to commands, barely conscious. The first thing that we thought it could have been was a stroke or or something bad related to the Multiple Sclerosis she has. Then she was in the hospital for about a week, then she had a relapse, which required another trip in the ambulance and another 10 days in the hospital. The second time, my sister and I were all the way up at Lake Sonoma as I was just finishing up the Waves to Wine and we both drove all the way back down to Santa Cruz right after that. To this day, there are several day spans where she has no memory. In the end, the doctors gave no definitive answer, but at best guess, it was a bad bladder infection that caused all that.

2. My friends and I were held at gunpoint about 7-8 years ago by about 10 or so cops. For this one, it really didn't sink in until a little while after this all went down. And this was pure stupidity on our parts. My friends and I were making a movie and we shot a scene with a gun (pun intended). The location was right off the 101 offramp by Coyote Creek Golf Course. We were shooting for about 3 hour, ran out of tape, then we were just starting to pack up to head out of there when we saw a cop turning around a minivan on the other side of the underpass. Then we saw another cop, and another, etc. And we were pretty much... oh ****. One of us threw the airsoft gun in the trunk (with the orange scraped off). Then a cop over the loudspeaker says "put your hands on top of your head, we heard you have a gun." After that, they pull one of the guys up towards one of the patrol cars, which was about 150 feet away at that time. Friend proclaimed that it was a fake gun and we were shooting a movie. From there, we could hear an audible sigh from the cop in charge, then he got over the loudspeaker and say "it is a fake gun, everyone lower your weapons and move in." From there, we got a 30 min lecture, rightfully so. The part that really made it stick is that while one of the cops was talking to us, one of my friends and I turned around to see 2 cops, 1 was opening the chamber to the assault rifle and the other was holding his hands out to catch the bullet that was chambered.

Off the top of my head, is when I was at a house party, a fight broke out and shots started poppin off (this was in the sunset district btw, graffiti party, stupid graff funk) I counted 5 shots, one person was shot in the leg

I've had COUNTLESS "oh sh!t" moments but I wouldn't really call those scary

mcast 01-27-2011 09:39 PM

Speaking of rope a few posts up.

This instance wasn't too scary, but it was pretty scary at the moment. I fell off a jet ski after doing donuts and my hand slipped off the throttle, couldn't get back on it(it was too light, and turned like a housefly, bad characteristics for something you're trying to get onto) the motor wouldn't turn over, I got towed back to shore and the rope got tangled around my arm and I was getting dragged and couldn't yell for help or for them to slow because the water kept rushing over me.

My arm went completely numb and the rope was very taut, I eventually got out of panic mode and slipped out of the rope, being stranded in the middle of a lake with a dead jetski felt like forever, getting towed back and getting dragged quite a distance felt like forever. When I got back, I asked how long I was out there and it was only about 15 minutes hahaha.

good times.

Javirex23 01-27-2011 09:40 PM

earlier this last year i was diving a fork lift and was going down a ramp. the cargo i was carrying wasn't properly secured and fell off and started rolling down the ramp...i put the E-brake on the forklift, jumped out and chased the cargo, i caught up to it and pinned it against the wall. suddenly i hear someone yelling "HEEEEYYYY" i took a step back and turned to see who said that, when suddenly the forklift passed right by me and pierced the cargo i was holding with the forks, completely destroying it....

i had to walk away. i didn't know what to think. i could have died....the guy that yelled at me said he yelled several times before i turned. he said he saw the forklift coming behind me down the hill....the 'E-brake' was faulty. we now have a new one that works lol

theres a small tear on my favorite Vans shirt, the forks missed me by inches

1. I was kayaking on the Bear River up where I live, It's a very calm river and you can use a pool tube/ airmattress on the first half if you wanted too, the second 3 mile stretch is about the same except for one part where you have to pay a little attention. I hit the one damn rock in the middle of the rapids and was thrown just as i'm drifting out of the worst of it my foot gets wedged and I'm pulled under. I surpassed the point of panic, went through all the thrashing and freaking out, then I hit peace. I reached a point where I was ok with not coming back up, I could have stayed there. Most surreal moment of my life both good and bad. My shoe finally let loose and I was back above water gulping for air like never before.

2. I was fishing up the American River by shirttail creek. I was a solid 2 miles up river and found a small side stream that I followed up and fished some killer pools. Had some awesome 8-10" wild trout that fought like no other. Kept going and reached a 20 ft water fall with a pool full of awesome fishing. I wanted more fish! so I climbed up and around the fall and came across a HUGE pot farm along the river banks. Keep in mind this is 2+ miles up sketchy river bank away from ANY civilization. not to mention its a 15 mile hella bumpy dirt road just to get to the river initially. ANYWAY! I happend to meet the end of a barrel of a gun. Said gun was owned by the farmer. He didn't say a word just held the gun in my face. I said "I'm just fishing. I never saw this, I won't say anything, I wont say anything, I'm just fishing" he said "you need to turn around right now..." I did, just turned around and started my hike down this creek. the whole time I knew he was going to shoot me as I was walking away. i was certain that this was it. but nope! I never even heard a gun shot. Kept fishing. even went back the next season, limited out on fish and never saw another plant. Gotta love placer county!

only #3 for me is umbilical cord wrapped over my son's shoulder and semi on neck, went to reach to take it off but had the thought just as i did it that I hadnt washed my hands for about an hour at that point, and also wasnt wearing gloves. AlanarchySTI 01-28-2011 02:25 PM

Damn, Daniel. I remember hearing about that Rammstein air disaster. That`s definitely got to be the scariest thing.

I used to love going swimming in the deep part of the beach as a 14-17 year old. One day I was in the deep area at a beach over in Halfmoon Bay for a good 15 - 20 mins. After getting out of the water there was a shark fin circling around the exact area were I was for about the same amount of time I was swimming. My family and I were having a BBQ.
Anyway, I had all these things going on in my head about getting mauled by a shark. From that point I never went in that deep again. Then again I hear they could be in shallow waters. :(

Overbear 01-28-2011 08:00 PM

Top 3

1)As a kid, we went to the drag races (sand), we were in the pits with my dads friend who had a open frame car. Watching a funny car blast down the 1/4, its twin paddle tires came off on one side, it spun, fliped end over end, and came down with the engine at full throttle, 3 feet from me, pointed right at me, it lurched half a foot and died as it poped out of gear. Had it stayed in gear it would have killed me, and 4-5 others.

2)High school, I was racing a few buddies, I was in my VW (70 bug w/2180cc and bus strip transaxle), flying down the 2 lane road when I came up on a almost 90 degree turn. I knew the turn, but was going WAY too fast. I hit it, and spun, 3 full spins I never let up out of the gas. The tires hooked up and shot me back across the road away from the ditch and pole I was going full tilt at, thru 3 mailboxes, one big shrub, and I got control and back on the road again...my heart in my throat I kept going and never looked back. Had to replace the front hood, and a few other parts.

3)around 22, I was hanging out with some homeboys, when a group from the other side of the city (look, fact is I was in with a BAD croud back then) pulled a drive by. I watched a friend take a round to the head..less than 2 feet from me...he didn't make it. The guys that did the drive by got theirs the next night, 3 of the 4 didn't make it. I got the hell out of that sceen 6 months after this all went down with a program the sheriff department had to help people out of the life.

couple years back when I went over to mexico to visit all my family members, I was sleeping in bed when I started to hear machetes scrape the floor on the second story at night, felt like they were doing it for 2hrs. my heart was beating so fast I couldnt breath good, sweating cold, and shaking, I can hear foot steps walking slow, steping on the leafs, I kept hitting my brother to wake up but some how he didnt wake up or didnt want too. I didnt slept the whole night. I mention it to my mom in the morning and said it was my grandparents, they use to fight alot and my grandpa will scrape his machete in the floor drawing his line...lol I wish I had meet them, thats pretty much the only scary thing thats had happend to me, I've seen death first hand and done things Iam not proud of but this inccident really scared the **** out of me, what if there is a heaven? dam, god will never let in then :(

Not so much scary for me, but scary for my family.

When I was 8 my appendix had started to rupture/burst... I was rushed to the hospital and didn't have to wait a single second. They immediately put me in a bathtub full of ice to lower my fever... the docs told my mom and dad that if I was 30mins late to the hospital that I could have died or at least have had severe brain damage because my temp was 108 That's NO JOKE.

My mom tried to be strong as I went into surgery but I could see the fear in her eyes... The potential of losing her 8 year old son. No parent should ever have to bury their kin. NEVER.

They removed my appendix just in time, it was rancid and highly infected. They asked me if they could keep it for observation because it had some kind of abnormality. So somewhere in a medical science book there's a picture of my infected appendix. Cool eh? That ish was scary as HELL.

Getting robbed and jumped under the Manhattan Bridge while walking my GF at the time to the subway station. Four guys, one with a bat, one with a 2x4, one with a glass bottle and I forget what the last guy was holding. Noticed the guys following us and told my GF to run, I grabbed a bottle off the street and cracked it open on the sidewalk. They engaged me I stabbed one in the leg and it was lights out after that. I woke up in the hospital two days later with my head stitched at multiple locations, a broken collar bone, broken hand and cracked rib. The only good thing that happened was my ex was able to run away unharmed and get police and an ambulance on the scene quickly. That was the worst day of my life.

At that point we were going head on with this guy at about 30-35 mph. My brother being the inexperienced driver he was, decides to lock up the brakes rather than downshift, sending us sideways into the snow plow which was coming right for us. My brother then makes another mistake and over corrects to try and get back in our lane, well... We got back into the lane, and then some. So now were headin sidewas off the side of the freeway with a 50 foot hill and a creek at the bottom. We end up sliding off the freeway right on to the crest of the Down slope of the hill, sideways once again haha. About this time I'm holding tHe "oh ****" handle preparing to roll down this mountain when all the sudden we come to a very sudden harsh stop, both right wheels lift off the ground and then settle down. We eneded up hitting a pretty large boulder with the driver side running board. So now were sitting, looking down hill, Our jeans full of digested food, and cofortably sitting on 3 wheels. We ended up stopping traffic and having a f350 diesel pull us out who almost ended up slipping off the mountain becaus of all the ice. Never saw the ******* who cut us off after that, I'm sure he saw the whole Thing go down in his rearview tho.

Watching my 20 month old son have a febrile seizure and turn blue was the most scared I've ever been in my life.

The scariest thing that ever happened to *me* was in 1991. I was tripping hard on acid, at the Cliff House. I followed my friends off of a walkway and onto some rocks over the ocean, and when I put my hands on the rocks, it felt like they were sinking in and I looked down to see waves crashing on the rocks. I must have clung to the damn rock for 3 or 4 minutes with my friends telling me to hurry up...
back in 2003 i caught a guy poaching deer off the county road by cache creek(the river area not casino lol) he was about 125yrds away. i yelled at him and he shot at me,hitting me in the waste. lucky for me he was 1)shooting a .22 2) a bad shot 3)i was wearing a leatherman. the bullet hit the leatherman causing a super gnarly bruise. i returned fire with my .45 hitting his truck as he drove away.

ive had more than one scary incident at work and all were close calls.

most recently im currently going through some really really nasty crap that leaves me scared everyday i wake up.
Holy crap man, someone was looking down on you that day.

Getting motared in iraq. It happened way to often, getting used to it is the unsettling part.

Was at the Russian River with a bunch of Church People, when I used to attend Church. We were canoeing down, and stopped over a beach area for some lunch. I wadded out into the water a bit, on the surface the water was slow and calm, but the sand at my feet started sinking and drifting away. I didn't panic at first but saw I was getting further and further away from shore. And not being a strong swimmer, with no vest on, I tried walking back but the sand was like quick sand, finally I am up my neck in water trying to swim back, but the sand won't let me feet go. I can't yell because half my head is submerged. I can see the people looking at me, but no one doing anything. For what felt like an eternity, I swam and swam until finally I was flopping on the sand, breathing like I never breathed before. No one even knew what had happened.

Undertow is no joke

Rolled a 4runner 6 times.... that sucked.

Sank a truck in the river, water was rising into the cab and the electric windows/locks weren't working.

4. The last time is when I got stuck in a very tight space in some cave... That part of the cave was called "Godzilla's Nostril". It was vertical and very tight. I was stuck for a while and started panicking. Im so closterphobic now thanks to that.... Ug.
