what's a good tint number
for sun/uv protection. I don't want anything dark at all, just enough to keep the car a little cool and protect the interior from fading. any suggestions?

35 is safe
20 is what I have on the subaru
been ticketed for it
Prius has 50, can barely tell it's tinted but it helps reduce glare
infinitesimally small risk risk of cop enforcement at 50
35 is a good balance

35 rear, 50 front. Flys low on the radar. 5% back and 50% front is nice because the back is so dark it offsets the fact that the front windows are tinted, but you said you don't want dark, so I'd go the 35% route. If you have the slightest bit of boy racer look to your car, steer clear of making the front too dark.
Also invest in a good fitted suncreen, when it''s parked those help a ton.

thanks for all the input guys, and the pic shoppingkart. I'll probably go with 35% all around except for front 50%. I have a fitted sunscreen for the front anyways.
I definitely want to avoid dark tint cause my catless wagon stinks big time...don't need any more attention.
I had no idea livermore was so frickin' hot/sunny compared to sunnyvale (ironic, since you'd think "sunny"vale would be worse).

These are old pics, but you can get the idea. My tint is slightly metalized so when the sun hits it directly it's a bit hard to see through, but the last pic, look at the door pillar on the drivers side and you can see it's not that dark at all.
5% rear, 50% front

and when she was 2 weeks old

Edit*
The law for california is 70% total transmissiveness in the front, a 6" stripe on the windshield, and no limit on the rear so long as you have two side view mirrors.
