I agree, you don't have to read a ton to be able to write fairly well but I don't want to start a debate in this thread either. Vocabulary, sentence structure and knowledge (not to mention many others) are necessary writing components gained through reading and there are no ways around the aforementioned to become a better writer. Remember, reading doesn't necessarily have to come from books.
