Post What the... Live Action Akira

Uh-oh. Hollywood ruining another awesome comic/movie. Otomo is actually involved so maybe it won't be that horrid.

Amidst all the great animes we've been exposed to, Akira stands out. Set in post-apocalyptic Tokyo, the neo-classic featured everything we've come to expect from Japan's animation wizards: stunning artwork, imaginative plot lines and absolutely killer conveyances – particularly the bikes which easily put Tron to shame.

Word is that Warner Bros. has signed a deal to create two live-action movies based on the six-volume graphic novel, with Leonardo DiCaprio helping to produce the films and Akira's creator, Katsuhior Otomo, being on hand as the executive producer. The first of the two films is expected to come to the big screen in the summer of 2009 and we have little doubt that it has the potential of blowing Speed Racer out of the water.

Oh woah, I'm interested to see what happens with this. I miss watching that movie, back when I was 12 or something.

Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaneeeeedaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

heh, yeah I read this earlier and was about to make a post about it

Sorry, but this is gonna have suck all over it. First of all, why remake this? If you can't appreciate it in it's original animated form, then the movie is just not for you. This movie is the definition of anime, and why anime and live action Hollywood movies are different, for a good many reasons, thankfully so. On the most basic level, the name of the movie "Akira" is about a character in a post apocalyptic neo-tokyo, the new one is about Leonardo DiCaprio in New York, are they still going to name him Akira? Hell, why not Bob?? Seriously, this is just another product of the creatively bankrupt If-it-can-be-a-movie-it-must-be-movie Hollywood of the 21st century. Im sure they've already got Michael Bey set up to direct it too. Ugh...

Leo isn't going to be in it.

From IGN (http://movies.ign.com/articles/853/853820p1.html):

UK, February 21, 2008 - Warner Bros. are ploughing ahead with their adaptation of the Akira graphic novels, with two live-action feature films now in production.

According to Variety, each movie will be based on three of the books in legendary artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume series that revolves around bikers and psychics in post-apocalyptic, dystopian Tokyo.

As IGN reported last year, Irish helmer Ruairi Robinson is set to make his feature debut with the first film, which WB execs have pencilled in for a summer 2009 release. Gary Whitta is writing the script.

Interestingly, Leonardo Di Caprio's production company Appian Way is also onboard – although as far as we know the star won't be involved as an actor.

The 1988 animated version of the story, directed by Otomo, became a cult classic thanks to its cutting edge animation and complex, adult plot, and a slew of writers, producers and directors have been trying to make a live-action version ever since. Let's hope DiCaprio and Co. succeed this time around.
