What happened to speed freakz program?
What happened to the 'speed freakz' program that the SCCA had? I was looking around the sf-region site and their application doesn't include it anymore, but there is a 'first gear' program for under 21 that costs $15 more. But the national site still has the 'speed freakz' on their app. but no mention of 'first gear.' What's the heck?!

Speedfreakz was the program for 2002....it is gone.
First Gear is the 2003 program for younger SCCA members. Guess the national website is behind the times on that one.
Hey, it's still cheaper than paying full price

OK, so it's $45/year now. Still cheaper than the $75 I have to pay.
If you're going to track events to economize $$$......well, I think you're in for a pretty brutal surprise just how "cheap" (or lack thereof) it really is
. Here's the math :
AutoX event : $25 (entry) + $40 (tire wear) + $5 (percentage of annual SCCA dues) + $10 (incidentals = gas, food, etc) = $80/event
Track Day : $150 (entry) + $150 (tire wear) + $50 (brake wear, and this MIGHT be low!) + $50 (gas, on track) + $25 (gas to get there and back) + $80 (hotel, unless you know someone in Willows) + $5 (percentage of SCCA dues) + $20 (food for weekend) = not so cheap (or more specifically around $500 or so for ONE event). Skip the hotels, and eat for free and you're still in for over $400 for ONE day of racing!
Don't get me wrong : track days ARE a blast. I've done them before and will do them again, despite the (much) greater risk of doing permanent damage to the car compared to AutoX. Just don't kid yourself into thinking it is "budget" racing.....unless your "budget" is pretty big

Edit: Upon reading the fine print, it's 21 & under. Well, I still liked speed freakz better because the age range was larger.

Ed,
True when you put it that way, but I'd rather do one track day every two months than 16 minutes of autoxing over a two month period. Autoxing has taught me a lot, and I've still got a lot to learn... It just seems like in order to be a #1 contender, I need to lose 600 lbs or so off my car or steal my girlfriend's Miata.
Using your stats:
Autox = ~$25/min
Trackday @ 30 mins track time = ~$16

Confessions of an Autocross Junkie
A trackday is more like 90 minutes of track time..
I am an avid autocrosser and I've done a few trackdays as well. Tracks are fun to drive on but for me it just wasn't as fun as an autocross. I actually got BORED by the end of the day last time I went to the track.
The pace of an autocross is so much faster in terms of how fast the corners come up. It drove me mad to take a corner.. wait.. take a corner.. wait.. etc. I don't care if I was going twice as fast, the corners came up half as fast. The other thing I like about autox is competition. Two rounds ago I thought I was going about as fast as I could that day on my second run. Then Joe came in about a half second under me and I went out and pushed it harder and dropped nearly a second. Nothing encourages you to improve like good competition.
Yeah you can analyze it in terms of dollars per minute or even raw seat time but I still like the raw energy of an autocross run over a few 20 minutes sessions of untimed laps. I'm mainly waiting for the day I can afford to go road racing. THEN you'll see me leave autocross without a backwards glance.
My name is Paul and I'm an autocrossaholic.
