What to eat when you visit Mexico?

I recently visited Mexico via a cruise to Cabo/Mazatlan/Puerto Vallarta.

The stops at the ports are short and I tried to ask the locals where to eat. For two places, they pointed me to a old toyota pickup with a makeshift kitchen shack lunchwagon where I had a torta. It was good, but similar to what I find here in san jose. Another place was a little mom&pop nook of a place at the back of a shopping area; a little stall with a kitchen and moms and aunty's cooking the food. I had some carnitas quesadillas/tacos. Again, good, but about on par as the mexican food places here. (And by mexican places in san jose, I'm referring to the places where the patrons are latino too).

Considering the limited time, and area that I could cover, what should I have looked for in the future?

Well San Jose is like little mexico so the difference in the food taste/quality is going to be about the same. just my 2 cents. i went to mexico and found the food the same as in San Jose.

Yeah, go try mexican food on the east coast. You'll realize that by comparison San Jose and Mexico are identical.

By that are you saying east coast mexican food is vastly superior or inferior?

This. We are very lucky to have great mexican food in CA. I grew up in OK and have lived on the east coast as well and a CA style mexican joint is pretty much non-existent.

You gotta stop by Coxitan. They got some AWESOME shrimp burritos. Their carne asada burritos are great too. It's all meat in there. None of that beans and rice filler that places up here love to stuff burritos with. No disgusting orange sauce either.

Yea the reason the food tasted the same is because Cabo, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun are all tourist places where the food is going to taste really similar to the food you eat here, not the best places to go eat and try real mexican food. If u want real tortas you need to go to Mexico City thats where the best tortas are and no way in hell compare to the ones here in Cali. If you want carnitas, best place to go is Morelia, or Guadalajara where the meat is 100% fresh killed and cooked that same day. Best Seafood is Veracruz, Acapulco, and Colima. Hope this helps for next time you go to Mexico.
