What did everyone here learn in school? (Specific question)

.... In regards to asking questions? Were you encouraged to ask questions? Were you ever told that "There is no such thing as a stupid question", etc? Or were you discouraged to ask questions?

I'm in an academy right now and they totally discourage asking any sort of questions unless it is a very general and not specific at all.

What the HELL kind of ***-backwards method of teaching is this? If you do ask a question and it's not up to par with the instructors discretion, you are later disiplined by one of the administrators and forced to either do pushups, or write 200 word memos as to why you shouldn't ask questions.

W T F!?

And that is my rant for the day.

no one should ever ask a question again in their life

the answer to everything is available at www.google.com

so yes, there is such thing as a stupid question

When asking a question, think to yourself

Did I google this question before asking?

If you did not then keep your question to yourself until you did.

i was always told that asking ? shows how dumb you are, because 99% of the time you can find out the answer yourself or its already been told.

you just need to pay attention and answer your own ?'s bruce

sounds like your being the lame 4 year old with all the stupid questions.

since when are pushups a punishment? I have to stop being so hard on myself...lol.

There is such thing as a stupid question.

To answer your question though, in school we were always encouraged to ask questions. In the military we were encouraged to ask questions as well. But if it's something the instructor already went over he's going to make you pay for the answer through humiliation. So get ready to take your medicine. But above all, don't leave the classroom without knowing what you need to know.

As a cop, you need to know the law. More importantly, you need to know how to write a report to cover your *** in the event you violate someones civil rights or empty a mag into some poor guy just trying to hand you his wallet in a dark ally way. A civil/criminal suit can empty out a cops bank account really fast...

I have always been encouraged to ask a lot of questions and I have to say a lot of my success in the military is asking about stuff. If you dont understand something, and you ask, and they humiliate you, that is stupid. I would rather spend an hour answering a question, then have some a$$hat pwn the police academy for something little that was not done right.

just my .02

asking questions does not show or make you stupid. if you dont know and you dont ask, then your stupid.

Verbatim! That's my train of thought exactly. So lame... But whatever, if that's what they want, that's what they get.

"There's no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people"

Well I think most "acadamies" are set up more to teach people to follow orders than they are about thinking for yourself, and in that context what you are saying makes perfect sense.

I went to a university where questioning and real thinking were generally encouraged, with only a few exceptions.

If I were in your situation, about this time I would be asking (myself- might get in trouble if you asked anyone else) if this is really the career path I want to take?

Good luck with all that, I hope you manage to hold onto at least some token sliver of your soul when you get through
