America has 1/2 the worlds cars. it would make sence for us to use 1/2 the fuel.

I blame lack of people wanting to use public transportation. It's popular in a few large cities for traveling to work and what not (ie: DC's Metro, BART, etc). But if someone were going to travel from LA to the Bay, they're going to drive, they wouldn't take the train. Unlike Europe where they use rail much more than we do. Plus their cities are relatively closer. Someone is not going to take a train from SF -> Denver. They're going to fly or drive.

And we have to think of things in relative terms. We have half the world's cars. We travel drive farther and have bigger cars/engines. As were all stated earlier.

stats are stupid.

Some of those countries aren't truly industrialized. Then you have the smaller more densely populated ones...that usually translates to more people closer to their jobs and closer to their families. Also usually translates to better public transit.

Then more of those just strait up have better transit system.

We're kind of hosed. The U.S. is designed around the red scare built highway system. We're more spread out and most people are financially forced to live farther from jobs and families. We spend more time in cars to live.

Then toss on to that the fact that even our tourism is built around driving and traveling and we're a country that uses petrol for the sake of other countries.

It's not as bad as our loveing media would like us to believe. it's not like we drive until our tanks are empty for fun. I can't stand putting gas in my tank and no one else I know enjoys it either.

These articles crack me up. ****ing liberal tree huggers.

7ppl @ 15mpg > 4ppl @ 25mpg

or

.46mpg/person > .16mpg/person

SUV's aren't bad when they're utilized.
