i heard somewhere that a GD and a GC had around a 500 pound difference. i cant remember which website i was on, but it was for a dealership in Washington State, and they said, according to their technical info, that my GC8 L sedan ( 2WD ) weighed around 2400 lbs..........
although i think its more like 2600.....

..kinda funny how the sedan is lighter- but the coupe needs more reinforcement, I guess?

But torsional rigidity and bending stiffness were increased by what, something like 150% or so?
That is going to have a big impact on how they drive too-
Personally, for what I do to my car, I'll take a few hundred pounds penalty for a much stiffer chassis and not be complaining

Not going to get into a GC vs. GD debate here (only to say that I went back to a GC and am a happy camper again)... but the weight numbers are a little off. Maybe that's the dry weight or something, but as I recall the coupe is about 5 pounds lighter than the sedan, and last time I went to a scale my GM6 was 2935 all up including me (135lb weakling). YMMV.

I believe the numbers that say the coupe is heavier. I think because of the lack of structural integrity (which is inherent in the 4-door design), the coupe needs more 'reinforcement'... and reinforcement = weight no matter how you put it.
.
And I believe I said that the numbers above are wrong.
This sounds more like what I remembered and what I have measured on the scale.

Don't get me wrong, although I drive a coupe I think the sedan is the better car, but please don't spread misinformation. I think the information posted above reflects the fact that the sedan was offered in more stripped-down models than the coupes, for example a 1.8L brighton sedan would be a lot lighter than a 2.5RS coupe.

2.5RS coupe / manual = 2795
2.5RS sedan / manual = 2800
2.5RS sedan / manual = 2800

Did you look at the link I posted? These weren't my personal opinions- it is information from a subaru dealership. And yes, I am aware that you are in disagreement with those numbers- why don't you contact that site and tell them to stop 'spreading misinformation' if you're so concerned. I wasn't trying to argue over this either- but you seem to be quick to discount other (possibly correct) information in favor of knoledge gained from one-time personal experiences. Bottom line- no car weighs exactly the same as another of the same model, esp. after a few years- and the weights I posted were listed as 'curb weights.' So your experience with certain cars doesn't really help the argument, unless you have weighed several of each model and seent he range of weights. So, in a way, we kinda have to take SOA's word when trying to figure out the general slight weight differnces between models. But I'm sure your and your friend's RS might still weigh lighter than an L coupe or wagon, but I'd still trust these numbers over a generalization based on a few experiences.
Also, I should have been more clear about the weights I copied and pasted- they are all 98 L models- the 98 OBS is 2835lbs and the 98 RS is 2825lbs. So, your 'stripped down' theory isn't quite applicable. So why would an L coupe be heavier than an L sedan? [back to my reinforcent reasoning] The RS has a larger engine, brakes, etc, so it makes sense that it is heavier- but it probably also has certain weight reductions to make up for the larger engine as comaped to the L coupe- because it seems like there should be a bigger difference in weight between the two.
I still see no reason to seriously doubt the numbers I've referenced.
...geez I write alot
at least I think I made my point.
