Question WebCam Experts: Can someone help me in buying a decent web cam...

Hey guys,

Its really tough to shop for my father in law, but we finally reached the decision to get him a web camera so he can speak go his family and friends back in Croatia by using Skyp or some web service.

Basically all he needs is:

1. The camera to be reliable

2. For the camera to have decent resolution

3. Not to hurt the wallet too badly

I don't care about size, brand, or anything as long as it is reliable and has a clear picture, unlike those weak security cameras with 50x50 pixels, hehe...

I don't know squat about webcams, well, as much as I used to when I worked at a company that made software for them, but its been about 8 years and everything has changed drastically, I figured we'd have at least a few guys that know about modern web cams that can help me in finding what I'm looking for.

Thanks guys, all help would be greatly appreciated!

Daniel

Yeah, I figured...

I was pretty much sold on Logitech since they make some pretty good products for other things and I didn't want to mess around with a CHEAPO camera with crappy software... I thought maybe you guys knew of some less expensive ones that had decent software/camera

Looks like I'll be getting a logitech of some sort.

one more thing about logitech cameras.

their software is kinda crappy. well, i mean to the point that it kills thunderbird when it needs to upgrade.

you need to terminate their driver. kinda dumb.

who knows what other app it breaks.

I have a Logitech one, and it works great with skype. I dont even have the software on my computer (but when i did it was crappppppay!).

I think I paid like $99 at best buy for it, and it hasent let me down yet

EDIT, if you want to see the quality of it go to the LIC website. The live feed from the desk is the logitech im talking about.

Logitech's are cool, standard Windows drivers for me and works great with Gmail videochat. Cool thing is most have an integrated mic so all you have is one cord, the USB, to the comp/lappy.

I have an older one without the Carl Zeiss lens but it's still a glass lens so the quality is pretty damn good.

Best webcam I've had was an old video camera plugged into a $30 USB Video Capture device. Everyone kept asking me WTF kind of webcam I had because the picture was sooo clear, I could zoom in and out and it had auto focus and auto light adjustment.

Wasn't very portable, but it was cheap and worked better than anything I've seen from other webcams. Especially 5 years ago.

Go with the Logitech 9000 pro. HD video, integrated mic, excellent audio and video quality. Less than $100.
