War on the 'Ring!
As you may or may not already know, an all out battle is currently raging on Germany's Nurburgring, between GM, Nissan and Chrysler, for the most part. Each manufacturer is fighting for the fastest record around the track with their newest weapons, and the times are absolutely insane. Shattered are the records set by the Enzo and CGT. Here's some of the latest:
GTR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBZ5i15yVU8 7:29.03
-no traffic
-shorter gears might inihibit top end?
Viper ACR: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdH4-gUF7cQ 7:22.8
-no traffic
-gets intimate with rev limiter, misses two shifts
Corvette ZR1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ikj90_Un0o
-no traffic
-clean run, with slight drift before the Mini-Carousel
And just for comparison, here's a vid of a BMW E46 M3 CSL, highly modified, also known as the Loaded M3.
Loaded M3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL7T9BD_Q3k 7:22.1
-not factory
-traffic
-sequential/SMG
What's next? What could be next? The GTR V-Spec will be out soon, and people are claiming that the GTR and ZR1 are "modified", whereas the GTR is "stock," but who knows really. The ZR1 might have a little more left in it, and the ACR definitely could pull it off in 7.1X with ease. The V-Spec is rumored to be lighter, more powerful and with carbon brakes, so it should also run in the 7.1X time frame.
Whatever. This is just crazy.

Right now I think the time for the Zr1 is 7:26 and the GTR 7:29 and a stock CSL 7:50, per wiki

It would be interesting to see how much more the lap times will drop as the manufacturers start shaving their tires or better yet, go for stickiers tires.

The crazy thing is, most all these sub 8 second 'ring beasts are all exotic machinery beyond middle class affordibility (come on now, if you can't save up to buy something in cash and have to take out a loan, you can't afford it) but in 2-3 years we're going to see the z06 (7:42 I think is its time?) in the mid-high 30k range, and affordable. Now THAT's crazy

Yup. Everybody wants to see their favorite come out on top and do it cleanly. I am waiting for the numbers for Lexus LFA and the new Supra, whenever they come out, if that even happens. Or maybe the new IS-F hardcore. Too bad the E92 M3 CSL has been canned.

Just like what happened to the prices on the C5 Z06. And E39 M5, and CTS-V, and so on, and so on...

I think it really depends on the driver... they need to get "The Queen of the 'Ring" out there... she got a cargo van around the ring in about 10.26 with lots of traffic.
