Just a design choice, to help create the invisible border, cause your eye automatically completes the line of that side of the box without necessarily having an outright box + it has enough of the "y" to still recognize it, as opposed to cutting it off too much and not recognizing it clearly enough.

i voted for the last sample simply because i dont think the shirt should be about and specific model year.
the best shirt idea would have been the brown one without a car and maybe the subaru symbol
