Ver. 1, 2, 3...
The first WRX STi was version 1 (except the number was left off IIRC). The next was version 2. The following model was version 3. The model they made after 3 was 4. After they made 4, they went on to make 5. After 5, they decided to make 6. 6 begat 7. 7 ate 9.

Different revisions since the car came out, i don't remember the specifics about anything up to 6,but 6 was the last GC, then 7 is the usdm 02-03, and now version 8 is the 04' style. This is along the same lines as Evolution I, II, III.....until VIII thats out right now.
i see, but the last few years of the gc look rather similar, that was why i was asking. and for the example of the evo... each evo looked completely different from the previous model...

Oh, and chipmOnk: the GC STi Versions look quite similar to one another, particularly the Ver. V and the Ver. VI. Takes a well-trained eye to spot the difference between those two.
But yeah, the generational gaps are not as dramatic as with the Lan Evo's...
Both STI version 1 and 2 looked pretty much the same. The version 3 was the first facelift version.
STI version 1 had around 240-250ps ( im not sure) while the version 2 was thew first to have 275ps. Both were closed deck blocks which were extremely durable. The version 2 or TYPE RA STI is probably the best engine block in terms of modifying. In stock form, this engine is extremely underated at 275ps

Besides, would you rather have to say "New Age Impreza WRX STi version" rather than version 7?
And versions don't just apply to STi's, they go for regular cars too, like MKI-IV for supras, VWs, and all those other cars, its our way of saying which generation, but most people refer to versions mostly for STi parts.

I see, I see...
I always thought that refering to the bugeyes as Vers. VII was just local vernacular as opposed to official Subaru nomenclature; and I suppose it indeed is
