Call your trash company and ask for a oil recycler bottle. They'll give you a 1gal container + some zip locks for the oil filter. Place it outside with your trash (NOT in the trash) and they'll deal with it for free.

Also Alameda county has a household hazardous recyclikng dropoff location every weekend. Location rotates between Oakland, Livermore, and Hayward

They'll take oil in most types of containers (Kragen won't, at least the one near where I used to live wouldn't) and they'll also take used coolant and most anything else.
I also have a friend who lives in Palo Alto where they have CURBSIDE oil and filter pickup... sweet... usually I give my oil to him, and go to the Alameda county dropoff when I have coolant.
