You have to put your info in when you open a bank account also, but only some of those are scams

It's not free money - it's either money that people paid for a service or product that is now in class action limbo, or dividend money people are owed where the payer could not find the payee. There's a million different possibilities, none of them scam-related.

In my case, I was a Pacific Bell customer for my home phone service 10+ years ago and there was a class action lawsuit that resulted in several years worth of fees being refunded to a certain group of users - myself included. As such, the address listed is one I haven't lived at for 10+ years, so I have to prove otherwise that it is indeed me to whom the funds are owed. Finding this info on a state-run .gov website doesn't scream 'scam' to me, but you're welcome to your own ignorant opinion.
